I think of my mother as Devonshire – though she was born in Lincolnshire! Her parents lived in Devon but her father was in the navy and her mother went to her parents for the birth. My Mum left Devon during the War (after the blitz on Plymouth in which friends and neighbours died), not returning till 1988, after my Dad had retired and my parents were free of family responsibilities.

I think of my maternal grandmother as Devonshire – though actually she was born in London, but the family moved / moved back to Devon when she was a baby.
