An introduction to the Issell family

The what, how and why of this study of an English family with a rare surname.

What?

The name Issell is now extinct in England.  Historically it was found in two areas: in South Devon and in Gloucestershire. In Gloucestershire it appears to be a variant of the far more common name there, Uzzell (more information here); this study does not include the Gloucestershire Issells.

Although extinct in England there are many descendants of one of the emigrants to Australia who bear the name; there seems to be plenty of them interested in the family there and I see no need to try to replicate a study into the Australasian Issells, so few will be found on my tree.

I have not found another thorough investigation into the name / family in England and hope that my research will be of interest to other descendants.

This study is being published in the following sections:

  • The Issell surname
  • Issells through the centuries
  • Issells genealogy
  • Issells research
