Alfred PRIOR
Set As Default Person -
Name Alfred PRIOR Relationship
with Teresa Ann GOATHAM Born 1819 Baptised 16 Jan 1820 St. Mary Magdalene’s Church, Stockbury, Kent, England
- KFHS transcript on CD19 (extracted 5 Aug 2011)
Gender Male Occupation 1851 Maidstone Reg Dist, Kent, England
Grocer - At the time of the 1851 census employing 1 errand boy - he was living with the family
Residence 30 Mar 1851 Upper Houe(?) Street, Maidstone, Kent, England
- The errand boy for the grocerery business and a general servant were living with the family (i.e. with Alfred, Rebecca and 2 very young children)
Occupation 1861 Newington next Sittingbourne, Kent, England
Grocer - The entry on the 1861 census shows "Firm of Prior and Dartnell", employing 3 men. (thanks to his descendant Sue Miles for this - I had trouble reading the entry)
Residence From 7 Apr 1861 to 2 Apr 1871 Newington Street, Newington next Sittingbourne, Kent, England
- In the 10 years since the 1851 census Alfred and Rebecca had at least another 6 children*, so the household now consisted of the couple, 8 children and a 16 year old house servant
By 1871 only 3 of the children shown in the previous census remained with their parents (Charles and Frank), 1 at least appearing to have died (Harry - his name had been reused) and in addition Alfred and Rebecca had another 4 with them (and could have had more*).
Rebecca's mother was also living with them too, as well as a 17 year old house servant.
* the gap between Rebecca and Charles suggests they may have lost one here, and since the oldest of the additional chidlren in1871 was 6 again there they could have lost 1 or 2 here
Emigrated 1881 Ohio, USA
- All but one of Alfred's surviving children went with him to the US.
Residence 3 Apr 1881 16, Grecain Street, Maidstone, Kent, England
- The family were back in Maidstone at the time of the 1881 census, and Alfred was unemployed - probably explaining why for the first time they had no house servant with them although as they now only had 4 children (Harry, Jessie, Tom and Fred) at home of whom the youngest was 7 the need must have reduced too.
Yes, they had had 2 more children since the last census - must be the last since Rebecca was now aged 52.
Since they emigrated soon after this Alfred may have given up work in preparation - or they may have emigrated because he was unemployed.
Died 1907 Ohio, USA
