Name John HAMBLING Relationship with Teresa Ann GOATHAM Born 1815 Blackawton, Devon, England Baptised 28 Dec 1815 St. Michael’s Church, Blackawton, Devon, England Gender Male Occupation From 1838 to 1841 Dodbrooke, Devon, England Tailor - Dodbrooke in the 1841 census, though his son was baptised in Kingsbridge in 1838 (PR entry not seen, only DFHS index, so don't know what abode given as in 1838)
Residence 1841 Ebrington Street, Dodbrooke, Devon, England - Address recorded as Ebrington or Barrack Street (in the 1841 census)
With John was his wife and daughter Mary, also a 3 year old Geo Hillman. Perhaps after the death of their infant son in 1838 his wife took on a nursechild.
Residence 1851 Park Street, Tormoham, Devon, England Occupation From 1851 to 1871 Tormoham, Devon, England Master Tailor - Shown as employing 1 man in 1851.
Listed in Kelly's 'Post Office Directory for Devonshire, 1856' as 'Hambling John, tailor, Park street'. This was probably his workplace from at least 1851 (when it was address recorded in the census) to 1865, when his daughter died here.
Residence 1861 Park Place, Tormoham, Devon, England - With his wife and 2 daughters (Mary and Elizabeth)
Residence 1871 11, Torwood Street, Tormoham, Devon, England - With his 2nd wife and baby son, but there were 5 other households (varying from 1 to 9 people) at the same address; in total 20 people were in the house!
Today Torwood Street looks a busy street with lots of shops; if it was the same in 1871 it must have been a good location for a tailor and dressmaker to be based.
Residence 1873 Park Lane, Torquay, Devon, England Died Sep Q 1873 Newton Abbot Reg Dist, Devon, England - GRO ref: Hambling, John aged 57 q3 1873 Newton Abbot RD 5b 98

It seems probable that John and Mary would have had one or more other children between Elizabeth and Charles.
Sometime between Elizabeth's birth and the 1851 census the family seem to have moved from Kingsbridge / Dodbrooke (in Kingsbridge Reg District) to Tormoham (in Newton Abbot Reg District). I say "seem to have" because they could have moved from Kingsbridge / Dodbrooke to X and then later from X to Tormoham.
No child born and died in Kingsbridge RD during this period (or born Kingsbridge RD / died Newton Abbot RD); in Newton Abbot RD is a Sarah Ann Hambling, whose birth was registered in Dec Q 1847 (GRO ref vol 10 p.143) and whose death was registered in JUn Q 1848 (GRO ref vol 10 p.118) (there were a few other - not many - Hambling births in Newton Abbot RD at this period)
A possible child of theirs in Kingsbridge RD was a John who was born and died in 1840:
GRO ref (birth): Hambling, John q3 1840 Kingsbridge 9 323
GRO ref (death): HAMBLING, John q3 1840 Kingsbridge RD 9 2__
(there were a number of other Hamblings born around this time belonging to other families, many being children of John's brothers so it is far from certain that John was the son of John)
There was also a birth in 1841:
GRO ref: Hambling, William Hellens q1 1841 Kingsbridge 9 399
The middle name is similar to that recorded as the surname of a child with John and Mary in the 1841 census. However, the firstname is different, the age different (given as 3 in the census - but it could be that is should have said 3 mo or 3 wks). With so many differences I think there was probably no link between the 2.
