Name Elizabeth VOGWELL Relationship with Teresa Ann GOATHAM Born Abt 1805 Whitchurch, Devon, England Childhood From 1805 to 1825 - Elizabeth lost her mother when aged only 4 and her father just 3 years later. As well as a sister, about 2 years her junior, she had three grandparents still alive, her paternal grandfather probably living in Walkhampton and her maternal grandparents in Sampford Spiney.
Elizabeth married in Walkhampton, so this maybe where she spent most of her childhood. Her paternal grandfather was also buried there, the year after Elizabeth was married, so he may have taken Elizabeth and Mary in. Having himself been widowed, though, when his youngest child was just 3 he had remarried about 5 years later, so Elizabeth probably had a step-grandmother to mother her*, and teenage uncles who we may imagine were more like older brothers.
Sampford Spiney Hall, which is where her maternal grandparents appear to have been living, and Walkhampton village are just over 2 miles apart, so she probably knew all 3 grandparents as well as a number of aunts, uncles and cousins well. The names of her children may indicate the importance to her of her Spurrell relations. After a son named after her husband (and her father?) was probably named after her husband's father. The thrid was named Samuel, but as well as being her Spurrell grandfather's name this was the name of a brother-in-law so we can't be sure it was after Samuel Spurrell. Jemima is probably a stronger indicator. Elizabeth had an aunt Jemima, her mother's youngest sister, just 12 the year Elizabeth was born, and who didn't marry until Elizabeth was about 20, so probably loved mothering her young orphaned nieces. (Nieces - Elizabeth's cousin Caroline, 5 years her senior, was deprived of her mother at a similar young age, and assuming she had no relationship with her father would also have been left parentless)
(* - I have not found the death of her step-grandmother so can't be sure)
Baptised 30 Jun 1805 St. Andrew’s Church, Whitchurch, Devon, England - From PR (seen image)
"Elizabeth, daughter of William Vogwell and Mary his wife"
Gender Female Died 4 Jan 1880 Whitchurch, Devon, England Cause: 11 months natural decay - I have cert - died of natural decay (11 mths)
Elizabeth died in Whitchurch Village - maybe she moved there after William died, or possibly just towards the end of her life: the "11 months natural decay" may well have meant she was not fit to live by herself, especially in a fairly remote hamlet. (Her daughter Jemima who registered the death also lived in Whitchurch Village, though as she had been with her parents at Pennycomequick in 1871 they probably moved together)

Whitchurch is about 28 miles from Kingsteignton, and only about half a miles less from Teigngrace. So how did William from the Kingsteignton / Teigngrace area meet Elizabeth from the Whitchurch area?
William's older sister Jane had got married in 1816 to one Henry Vogwell; Henry was the uncle of William's bride so I guess it was through his sister Jane that William met Elizabeth.
But of course this then creates the question: how had Jane from the Kingsteignton / Teigngrace area met Henry from the Whitchurch area?
