Name John JURY Relationship with Teresa Ann GOATHAM Born Abt 1815 Horrabridge, Devon, England - Horrabridge was in the Parish of Buckland Monachorum at this time.
Baptised 21 Jan 1816 St. Andrew’s Church, Buckland Monachorum, Devon, England - From PR (only seen DFHS transcript)
John Jury, parents John and Susanna, abode Horrabridge, father's occupation: labourer
(DFHS has 21 Jan; I have seen 21 June with a query)
Gender Male Residence 1839 3, Granby Street, Stoke Damerel, Devon, England - Address given when he married
Residence 1851 Roust, Whitchurch, Devon, England - Shown as address when the census was taken in March and when his son Nicholas was born in July.
Occupation 1851 Farm labourer - Recorded as a farm labourer in the 1851 census but a mine labourer at the time of his death in 1857. (Just as a labourer in 1861 on his daughter Elizabeth's marriage certificate).
While he may have made a deliberate "career change" he may have worked at various times as a farm labourer or mine labourer, as the opportunities for each ebbed and wained.
Living at Roost in the 1851 census, it would be easy to assume he was working at Roost Farm, the previous entry, for the Kerslake family. However, it is recorded that 2 labourers were employed on the farm and the 2 entries following the Jury family were also at Roost and included an ag lab in the household! After Roost the census lists Grenofen House and then Samuel Witheridge, farmer of 151 acres on a farm described simply as "Plymouth Road" (still in Whitchurch). Although Samuel must have needed help on a farm of this size, he had 5 sons living at home of an age to work with him.
Occupation 1857 Buckland Monachorum, Devon, England Mine labourer Died 8 Jul 1857 Rix Hill, Whitchurch, Devon, England Cause: Pneumonia (11 weeks), Fever (Certified) - GRO ref: Jury, John q3 1857 Tavistock RD 5b 221; GRO online index shows age at death as 41
Death given as Rickshill - I assume this is the same as Rixhill / Rix Hill.
The death was registered by Mary Vigurs, "in attendance", another resident in "Rickshill". In the 1851 census the next family to John and Mary Jury and their family in Roost was William and Mary Ann Vigurs with their 10 year old son; Wm and Mary still had just the one son in the 1861 census. Their marriage was probably in 1840, with Mary recorded as Marianne Metters - no known connection with Vigurs or Metters, so probably a friend rather than a relation, possibly able to help with looking after John in his final illness, or with the children and pracitcal chores while John's wife Mary looked after him.
"In attendance" does not mean that Mary Vigurs was present at the death, but that she had been present during his final illness.
It's easy to see that John's wife Mary would have needed assistance, with John's illness lasting nearly 3 months, and Mary having a family of 10 to care for, including a baby less than a year old. Though the oldest was 17, those old enough to give significant help would have been in jobs which they may not have been able to leave easily to care for a sick Dad.
