Name Edwin (“Edward”) GOATHAM Relationship with Teresa Ann GOATHAM Born Dec Q 1842 Bredgar, Kent, England - GRO ref: Goatham, Edwin q4 1842 Milton RD v 377; GRO online index (viewed 9 Nov 2016) shows mother's maiden name as Barrow.
Baptised 30 Oct 1842 St. John the Baptist Church, Bredgar, Kent, England - From PR entry (image on FMP, viewed 18 Jun 2019)
Abode Bredgar, father William shown as a labourer.
Gender Male Education 1851 Scholar Residence 1861 Poziers Farm, Borden, Kent, England - Recorded as Edward, but age (19) and birthplace (Bredgar) point to this being Edwin (there were no Edward Goathams born close to 1841/2, and although there was another Edwin, born 1839 but he was born Faversham not Bredgar; although I have yet to find him in 1861 both age and birthplace would have to be wrong for the Edward at Poziers Farm to be the Edwin from Faversham)
Occupation 1861 Poziers Farm, Borden, Kent, England General Servant - Edwin was shown as a servant, but on a farm farm labourers could be considered as servants, so he was most likely working on the farm, not domestic work in the house. The farm consisted of 197 acres, and farmers Richard Foord, aged 70, and his son of the same name, aged 43, employed 9 men and 1 boy.
Residence 1871 10, Goodnestone Road, Sittingbourne, Kent, England - A lodger, probably with the family listed after him in the census, unless there were two families living at the same address and the other absent on census night. (No one for this address on the previous page) The family listed after him were headed by Frederick Beds, a brickfield labourer.
Occupation 1871 Sittingbourne, Kent, England Bricklayer's labourer Occupation Bef 1879 Marine Store Dealer - On his death certificate
Lunacy 19 Apr 1879 Kent County Lunatic Asylum, Chartham, Kent, England Admission - The admissions register shows:
No. in order of Admission: 46667; Name: Goatham Edward; a male pauper patient; Date of Admission. 1879 19 Apr; Asylum: Chartham; Date of Discharge or Death: 2 Sep 79; Died.
Died 2 Sep 1879 Kent County Lunatic Asylum, Chartham, Kent, England Cause: Epilepsy and Disease of the Heart - GRO ref: Goutham [sic], Edward q3 1879 aged 30 Bridge RD 2a 360

Is this the right death?
I believe it is.
Since the surname Goutham doesn't seem to exist other than the occasional mis-spelling (or mis-transcription) of Goatham, I am pretty confident that he was a Goatham and this is confirmed by the lunatic asylum admission entry, which shows that he died in the asylum on 2 Sep 1979, and records the surname as Goatham.
Despite the name and age discrepancy, I do think that it probably did refer to this Edwin since there seems to be no other record for him after the 1871 census, and (more significantly) no earlier evidence for an Edward or Edwin born c. 1849.
I say 'more significantly' since Edwin could disappear from the records due to emigrating, but Edward is unlikely to appear as though from nowhere. (There is no Edward / Edwin Gotham who this could be, and no Edward Goahtam in any census other than this Edwin was recorded as Edward in the 1861 census).
I hope to see asylum records which may give more information and hopefully confirm that Edwin and Edward are one and the same.

"William Goatham Bacheler and Charlotte Evans Spinster [sic] ..."
Married 15 May 1841 St. John the Baptist Church, Bredgar, Kent, England - GRO ref: GOATHAM, William to EVANS, Charlotte q2 1841 Milton RD 5 441
Details from PR entry (image on FMP, viewed 20 Jun 2019)
Charlotte was shown as a widow when she married William, with her father named as 'Robert Barrel', though 'Barrel' seems to be a mistake for 'Barrow'. Her maiden name is variously shown as Barrow or Evans on the birth certificates of her children (information from the GRO online index, viewed 5 Nov 2016).
The censuses show Charlotte was born about 1817 in Faversham and there is a Charlotte Barrow who fits this perfectly. In addition, in the 1841 census Charlotte Barrow's mother is living in Bredgar very close to William and Charlotte (just a couple of entries apart on the census), with an Aylett family. It seems that Charlotte's sister Ann had married one John Aylett in 1834, and Ann's mother was with them. I think it probable that after Charlotte was widowed by the death of her 'Evans' husband she went to live with or at least visited her mother and sister in Bredgar, and thus got to know neighbour William Goatham.
William was still shown as married not a widower in the 1871 census, but Charlotte was not with him and their 3 youngest. She was living in her birthplace Faversham when she died; whether she had left him and was there in 1871 I don't know.
