    • Most likely Francis was working for Thomas Ruff at Hysted Farm in 1851 and 1861. In 1851 this was shown as a farm of 394 acres, employing 19 labourers, although by 1861 Thomas Ruff, now age 81, had got rid of some land, and had just 160 acres and in line with this was only employing 5 men and 1 boy.
By 1871 the picture is less clear as it appears Hysted Farm had been renamed Hysted House, and as the new occupier, Jesse Thomas, was not just a landowner and farmer but also a brickmaker the  number employed on the farm is not clear. In total Jesse was employing no less than 50 men, 15 boys and 4 girls. I guess the 4 girls included his live-in domestic servant, Francis' daughter Ellen.
In 1881 the farm was still in the Thomas family (Hysted House was now Highsted Farm again), headed by 38 year old Albert. He was employing 25 men and 4 boys, so this probably included the 3 ag labs in 1 Highsted Cottage - Francis and his sons Alfred and Frank. Albert Thomas and his wife had 4 young children (aged 3 months to 9), but just 2 live in servants, a governess and a general servant, so it seems likely that Francis' daughter Elizabeth, described as a general servant but at home on census night, was working in the farmhouse.
