  • Name John JURY
    Suffix [ONS gp] [Parents?]
    Relationshipwith Teresa Ann GOATHAM
Born Abt 1775  Devon, England See the place on a map and other information about it - if available (many more will be in time); also all individuals with events at this location
    • Born about 1771 based on his being shown as aged 69 in the 1841 census. All the other over 15s on the page have their age rounded to multiples of 5. Was this a slip of the pen and should be 60? - it doesn't look like it. Did the ennumerator mis-read a slip of the pen by Margaret or her husband providing the household details? - who can say.
Both burial register and death registration gives an age of 77, suggesting he was born in 1767-68.
Born Devon according to the 1841 census - though this also shows his son-in-law (living in the same house) as born Devon, while the 1861 and 1871 censuses show him as born Cornwall!
If he was baptised in 1775 he was probably born that year or 1774, not as early as 1771.

John and Susanna clearly named their 2nd son after her father - giving his both Christian and surname as Christian names. Their second daughter appears to be named after Susanna's mother. It seems probable, therefore, that 1st son and 1st daughter were named after John's parents. A likely looking baptism could then be in Lewtrenchard in 1775; however, a John and Jane had a son Richard baptised in Lewtrenchard in 1815 - that John could well be the son of Richard and Mary baptised in 1775 and if so would rule out this one.

However, another John, also son of a Richard and Mary, was baptised in Virginstow in 1775. I think he was probably the John who had a couple of children baptised in Lewtrenchard, but ...
IF John was one of these two Johns, it is just possible that I have switched them.
I have added the other John and his (or my John's) ancestry.

There was, though, a marriage of a John Jury of Thrushelton to an Ann Harry in Coryton in 1793. The sisters of the John baptised in Lewtrenchard were baptised in Thrushelton; it therefore seems likely he would have been 'of Thrushelton' in 1793. However, not only would it have been unusual for a man to marry as young as 18, but John and Ann named their first children Valentine and Susanna, pointing to John being the John Jory baptised in 1770 in Thrushelton, son of Valentine Jory and his wife Susanna.

Some trees show this John as the son of Edward Jury and Joanna née Darch of Ashreigney. There are a number of problems with this:
      1. Ashreigney was over 30 miles from Whitchurch, people (other than gentry etc.) did not usually travel so far, unless for work of a particular nature. There is no apparent work reason for John to have moved for work.
      2. It appears that at least some of the children of Edward and Joanna are recorded in Ashreigney PRs as being the children of Edward and Hannah. Assuming this is the same couple, then there seems to be no John, judging from the index on FMP (as at 2 May 2023) and no obvious gap when John might have been born, unless much younger than the records suggest. None of the trees I have seen showing this John's parents as Edward and Joanna have evidence linking a son John to Edward.
      3. There is nothing in the names of the children or ancestors of Edward of Ashreigney reflected in the names this John gave to his children, and the names of his first son and first daughter become a puzzle if his father was Edward.
      4. Whilst there was a John Jury baptised in Ashreigney in 1775 he was the son of a John and Elizabeth, and there is good evidence for him staying in Ashreigney, until sometime in the 1840s, with the 1851 census giving his birthplace as Ashreigney, strongly pointing to him being the one baptised there.

Since writing the above I find I have two DNA matches with descendants of Grace, daughter of Richard JORY and Mary DOWN, and my brother has another. I now think it highly probable that I do descend from the Richard and Mary shown.

    Manor Court Juror
    • Mike Brown (of Dartmoor Press) has recorded the names of the 13 Meavy Manor Court Jurors for the years 1811-1820. Whilst there is a lot of continuity from year to year, John Jury appears just once, in 1812.In 1810 a child of John's was Baptised in Whitchurch, in Jan 1816 in Buckland Monachorum, so John's period living in Meavy appears to have been short, but as he had a daughter baptised there in 1814 as well as in 1812, it would appear he could have been a juror for another year.
The sort of matters the court dealt with can be seen from the examples for Meavy Village, also recorded by Mike Brown (see Meavy2- Meavy Village on the webpage linked to).I don't know how the Jurors were chosen, but John's wife's uncle, Bartholomew Mattacott, was a juror in all 10 years; perhaps he suggested John when the family moved to the parish.
    Also known as John JEWRY
Occupation 1814  Meavy, Devon, England See the place on a map and other information about it - if available (many more will be in time); also all individuals with events at this location
    Farmer
    • At the time his daughter Susanna was baptised (the baptisms of his children before this one contain no indication of father's occupation).
Although just the one reference to John as a Farmer while all others show 'labourer' could suggest an error, I think it more likely he was a farmer who in difficult economic times could no longer continue as such. The fact he married a yeoman's daughter, and his step-father-in-law was also a farmer suggests he too may have started life at this level.
    Occupation From 1818 to 1841
    Labourer
    • At time of son James' baptism (1818), on son John's marr cert (1839) and in the 1841 census.

Died 6 Jun 1845  Horrabridge, Buckland Monachorum, Devon, England See the place on a map and other information about it - if available (many more will be in time); also all individuals with events at this location
    Cause: Debility from age
    • Alive at the time of the 1841 census - with his dau Margaret in Beer Ferrers.
Not with Margaret (who was still in Beer Ferrers) in 1851, but not buried Beer Ferrers (checking the register transcripts for 1837-1850 and 1851-1861.
Could have gone to be looked after by another child, or died in the workhouse, or have died Beer Ferrers but been buried elsewhere (e.g. with his wife in Whitchurch). The burial register shows his abode as Buckland Monachorum, suggesting he was no longer living with his daughter Margaret, and his death certificate confirms he died in that part of Horrabridge which was in Buckland Monachorum parish.

GRO ref: Jury, John q2 1845 Tavistock RD 9 308; GRO online index shows age at death as 77

His death certificate gives the same age as the burial register, making him older than the census suggests, but it does say "about" suggesting the informant, one James Willcocks, wasn't quite sure.
So who was James Willcocks? - this must have been John's son-in-law of that name, married to his daughter Mary. Mary and her family were living in Meavy at the time of the 1841 census, but were in Horrabridge by the time of the 1851 census. Presumably John had moved from living with his daughter Margaret in Bere Ferris to living with Mary in Horrabridge at some point between the 1841 census and his death.

Although spelt Jewry in the burial register the "matching" death registration has Jury, which seemed to become the regular spelling (for my line at least) during the C19th.
