Thomas ISSELL
Set As Default Person -
Name Thomas ISSELL Relationship
with Teresa Ann GOATHAM Born Abt 1824 Stokenham, Devon, England
Baptised 22 Aug 1824 St. Michael and All Angels’ Church, Stokenham, Devon, England
Gender Male Occupation From 1841 to 1870 Issells’ Corner, Stokenham, Devon, England
Shoemaker - Shoemaker (1841 census), boot & shoemaker; sub-postmaster (Morris's directory, 1870).
Although the directory shows Thomas as the sub-postmaster, an item in the local paper when Tryphena retired implied it had been her job all along.
Residence From 1851 to 1891 Stokenham, Devon, England
- The 1851 shows clearly that Thomas and Tryphena did not live with John and Salley, so they can't both have lived at the corner house at that time. The census entries are quite close, though, with the Vicarage and just one other house listed inbetween.
In 1871 there are 3 other households listed between Thomas and Tryphena and the Vicarage, and Thomas and Tryphena have the same Pitts family in the adjacent entry the other side, so it looks like they were probably living in the same place.
However, in 1861, they are the first entry listed as "Stokenham Village", half way down a page, suggesting that they too (i.e. like John and Salley) were living on the edge of the village.
Still "next door" to the Pitts in 1881, and with the Jeffreys a couple of doors away in both 1881 and 1901 I think Tryphena remained in the same house after she was widowed.

Notes - Of Stokenham (no addr 1851; address just given as "The village of Stokenham" in 1861 census). With wife and "visitor" Tryphosa Kellond (one of his wife's sisters) at the time of the 1851 census. With wife, children Florence, Thomas E and a nephew Thomas at the time of the 1861 census. The son of Robert fits as the nephew, and did become a cordwainter. Although Robert had been a cordwainer too, he died when his son Thomas was only 8, so couldn't have taught him the craft.
