George VOGWELL
Set As Default Person -
Name George VOGWELL Relationship
with Teresa Ann GOATHAM Baptised 15 Jun 1780 St. Pancras’ Church, Widecombe in the Moor, Devon, England
- DP transcript of bapt entry shows George Vogwill, son of George and Cathrine - see below notes on my thinking about whether George fits here.
Gender Male Died Yes, date unknown Buried 2 Feb 1798 St. Pancras’ Church, Widecombe in the Moor, Devon, England
- From PR entry (image on FMP, viewed 27 Jan 2020)
"Feb. 2. George Vogwill _ [A[nno]. æ[tatis].] 18" - under headings 'Buried' and 'Anno Domini 1798'
It may well not be coincidence that the burial immediately preceeding George's was Catharine, his first cousin; I suspect he may have been living with his uncle and aunt and cousins, possibly working for his uncle.
Siblings2 brothers and 1 sister Patriarch & Matriarch
George VOGWELL, b. Abt 1752, Widecombe in the Moor, Devon, England
, d. 28 Jan 1826, Walkhampton, Devon, England
(Age ~ 74 years) (Father)
Elizabeth HANNAFORD, d. Yes, date unknown (Mother)
Notes - n.b. Dartmoor Press transcript of bapt entry shows George as son of George and Cathrine. I suspect that George was the son of this George and his wife Elizabeth, and that the priest forgot and gave his wife's name as Cathrine in the register.
Whilst George could have been the son of Wm and Catherine, a mistake in the father's name is probably less likely, and more significantly this would imply a birth unusually soon after their son Nicholas, unless the baptism of Nicholas was not so close to his birth as was the norm.
However, the burial in 1798 seems too much to be co-incidence, and there are no other later Vogwell entries in Widecombe other than the 3 relating to Nicholas and his wife and dau, but Wm and Elizabeth seem to have moved from Widecombe to Whitchurch c. 1784. Whilst it might seem unlikely they would have moved and left George behind he could have been bur in Widecombe because:
- family grave there
- he had returned there to work, due to family contacts
- he could have remained there, living with grandparents - would not have been unusual in those days. (Whilst his Vogwell g'parents also moved to Whitchurch, he may have been with his Hannaford ones)
Alternately ...
There was also, though, the burial of a George in Whitchurch in 1851 aged 73, suggesting a birth probably about 1777 (died February, so not on the 1851 census). I think this was the George who was one time landlord of the Ship Inn in Morwellham.
Am I wrong in thinking this George from Widecombe died in 1798? If so, was it this George who was formerly a gamekeeper and then landlord at the Ship?
He can't have been the son of John Vogwell who was baptised in Buckland Monachorum in 1747, as that John appears to have died in 1759. I believe there was a cousin of John, another George, bapt in 1753 in Landulph.
It may be that I am right that this George died in 1798, and George the gamekeeper and / or Ship Inn landlord was a son of John?

Shows George Vogwell married Elizabeth Hannaford, both otp, married by Banns, both made their mark as also did witness William Vogwell. The other witness was Nathaniel Tremill, who was witness to most marriages in Widecombe at this time and so almost certainly Parish Clerk. (William was probably George's brother though could have been his father. Siblings or other young people were more often witnesses than parents)
