    • Please note:
From PR entry (image on FMP, viewed 29 Sep 2012):
under heading "Baptisms ... Whitchurch ... 1847" - "March 21st. No. 535. John [sic] Son of John & Mary Jewry, abode: Parish of Whitchurch, father's occupation Labourer, ceremony performed by T.(?) Sleeman, Vicar"
This may be the baptism of John born c. 1840.
At the time of the 1851 census it would appear there was not a John born around 1845-7 living with the family, although John born c. 1840 was still living and still at home. In addition, no other July family has been found in Whitchurch at the time of the 1851 census and with parents named John and Mary it would seem to be this family. No dth of John registered before 1851 census, if this was the John's whose birth was reg Q4 1845 (GRO ref: q4 1845 Tavistock RD 9 453).

Although it was usual to record a date of birth where the person being baptised was not a young baby, this was to provide evidence of a person's age, and so may not have been necessary by 1847 due to the introduction of birth registration 10 years earlier.

However, the most likely alternate explanation is that the priest when recording the baptism got the name (and gender) wrong.

Although the birth of Eliza was recorded in the 2nd quarter of 1847 if she was born late in the first quarter it is quite likely it would be registered in the next quarter.

** her birth certificate would confirm whether or not she was born by 21st March - but I'm not buying one just to find out **
