The light was not at its best; if I get the chance I will try to photograph this stone again with my newer better camera and hopefully a better angle of the sunProbate Jun 1855 Archdeaconry Court of Totnes, Devon, England - A second probate was later granted, probably due to the emigration of James Steed, one of the executors, and his family, in about 1857.
In 1858, i.e. between the first grant of probate in 1855 and the second in 1861, the proving of will was changed from being the responsibility of church courts to a national court.
Probate. 18 Jun 1861 Exeter, Devon, England - "The will of Robert Issell late of the Parish of Slapton in the County of Devon Cordwainer deceased who died on or about 5 July 1853 at Slapton aforesaid was proved at Exeter by the oath of Thomas Issell of the Parish of Stokenham in the County Cordwainter the Brother the other Executor. Former Grant Archdeaconry Court of Totnes June 1855.
Effects under £300."
This second probate was probably due to the emigration of James Steed and his family, c. 1857, who was originally responsible with Thomas for managing Robert's money for his family. It is interesting that Robert choose his brother-in-law rather than either of his other brothers. Perhaps the fact that his brother William was imprisoned for a fortnight in 1854 for stealing rope gives a clue - although this was after Robert wrote his will, he may well have seen him as not being a dependable person to fulfill this role. Robert had lived and worked for a while in South Pool (there in 1841), where James Steed also lived and so would have had a chance to get to know him. Possibly James had been apprenticed to Robert's father, in which case James would probably have lived with the family and have given James the potential for him to be like an older brother to Robert.
