      Image Number: 00493. Shown as aged 61, the wife of James Steed, and with children Willia, Emma and James. Although I don't know of children to fit these they were / could have all born after the 1851 census. James' age at death is also consistent with this couple.

      A transcription of White's Devonshire Directory (1850) shows a schoolmaster living in the village, so it would appear to have had a school by then, so the younger children of Betsy and James, Robert and those younger at least, possibly all, would have been able to go to school locally.
