  	The family was living in  Bedford Bridge Cottages when his fsister Hannah was born in 1864, his father, Samuel, at that time was a "mine labourer". Bedford Bridge is about half a mile north of Horrabridge, a couple of miles from Buckland Monachorum village; the main industry in Horrabridge was copper and tin mining.

  	His sister Mary Ann's birth certificate shows that the family were living in Clearbrook where his father, Samuel, was working as a farm labourer. Clearbrook is a hamlet someway from Buckland Monachorum village, though in the Parish. The hamlet is believed to have become established due to mining in the 1850s, and mining was the main source of employment. Samuel may have worked both on the land and in the mine according to the season.
