Notes:
The village is rather different to the one most of my ancestors would have known. Of course everywhere is rather different to how it looked in the C17th and C18th centuries, but my 4 x great grandfather, Joseph Bailey, would appear to have left in the 1780s, before the church was rebuilt and before the Stover Canal was built, on whose banks the village now stands. When the canal was in active use there was a dry dock at Teigngrace, possibly the liveliest period in the village's history.
On the east of the village, the Old Series (1809) OS map appears to show marshy ground. While this is not apparent on later OS maps, some school log book entries seem to confirm this: several entries refer to the school being closed due to flooding, and on 29 October 1907 it was recorded that "Register not marked today as only 13 present due to marshes & roads flooded" [ref.]
My last ancestors to live in the parish were probably my 5 x great grandparents, William and Mary Bailey, parents of the above Joseph. At the time of writing it appears William may have lived until 1817, although I can't rule out the burial that year being another William. If he did he would have seen both the church rebuilt and the arrival of the canal. I have yet to find a burial that could be that of his wife so I don't know whether or not she lived to see these events.
The school register for 1873 - 1922 records the admission of a number of Baileys, Gales and a Bulley who could be cousins (also a number of Sweetland who could be very distant cousins, as Sweetland ancestors lived in Ideford in the C17th, and Ideford is not far from Teigngrace - about 5 miles on modern roads)
