Name John PIKE Relationship with Teresa Ann GOATHAM Born 1789 Stokenham, Devon, England Baptised 31 May 1789 St. Michael and All Angels’ Church, Stokenham, Devon, England [1] Gender Male Residence From 1816 to 1871 Torcross, Stokenham, Devon, England - Living at Torcross at every mention, 1816 - 1871.
John and family had John Callaghan, a 35 year old coast guard, living with them in 1841. He built the house on top of the hill above the main part of Torcross, on land that he leased for 3 lives, next to the Coastguard Cottages, so very convenient for a coast guard.
Occupation From 1816 to 1833 Torcross, Stokenham, Devon, England [2] Fisherman Occupation From 1841 to 1870 Torcross, Stokenham, Devon, England Basket maker - He is recorded as a basket maker in the 1841 & 1851 censuses, and also in Morris's Directory of 1870, but not in the 1871 census.
The similar 'wickerwork' maker in the marriage certificate of his son John.
I don't know what sort of baskets John made. I originally assumed these were lobster pots etc. for the local fishing industry, but of course the suitability of the area for growing willow may have encouraged the making of a wider range of baskets here.
Occupation From 1854 to 1874 Torcross, Stokenham, Devon, England Lodging house-keeper - The dates shown is a guess; his mother was shown as a "proprietress of houses" in the 1851 census (when she was the adjacent census entry to John so probably next door) and she died in 1854 so I imagine John may have taken over then. Morris's Directory of 1870 describes him as lodginghouse-keeper and the 1871 census as house proprietor. I also guess he would have carried on till his death.
Died 8 Oct 1874 Torcross, Stokenham, Devon, England Buried 12 Oct 1874 St. Michael and All Angels’ Church, Stokenham, Devon, England [3] The grave of John and Susan Pike Probate 25 Nov 1874 Exeter, Devon, England Calendar entry - Pike John.
25 November. The Will of John Pike late of Stokenham in the County of Devon Basket Maker who died 8 October 1874 at Torcross Stokenham was proved at Exeter by William Henry Pike of Stokenham Basket Maker the Son the sole Executor.

Yes, date unknown (Grandmother)Notes - A survey of people and property in Stokenham Parish in 1842 showed John Pike as owning a willow plot of 2 rods and 22 perches - at "Lakes Ten"(?). He also owned a small orchard (1 r 24 p), at Stokeley. He was also the occupier of some garden owned by A. H. Holdsworth.
A house of 3 dwellings and garden that he owned was occupied by Thomas Troot and others, but he was the occupier by the time of the tithe apportionment list in 1846.

Father William PIKE, b. Abt 1761, Stokenham, Devon, England , d. 23 Apr 1837, Torcross, Stokenham, Devon, England (Age ~ 76 years) Mother Mary RIDER, b. Abt 1767, East Allington, Devon, England , d. 24 May 1854, Torcross, Stokenham, Devon, England (Age ~ 87 years) Banns of marriage From 1 Jun 1788 to 15 Jun 1788 St. Michael and All Angels’ Church, Stokenham, Devon, England [4] Married 21 Jul 1788 St. Michael and All Angels’ Church, Stokenham, Devon, England - William Pike signed and Mary made her mark; both witnesses appear on other marriages, John Sayes (? best guess) and John Gardner
A William and Mary Pike had a son John baptised in Charleton on 24 Feb 1805; I don't believe it was this Wm and Mary - esp as they already had a son John, but could well be a relation (although Pike is generally a common name there weren't a lot in Stokenham and neighbouring villages; I don't know what became of some others e.g. this Wm's 1st cousin Wm bapt 1753 - could he be the father?) I came across looking thro' baptisms in the PRs (microfiche images) but South Hams website confirms it as the only Pike baptism in Charleton, 1730-1812.
