Notes - In 1871 staying at Ash House in Stoke Fleming - a dash in place of relation to head of family so can't tell if boarding there or what (others in same house shown as visitor or servant). Occupation shown as "Farmer's son"!
James was the Farmer at Ash Farm Stoke Fleming in 1891 with his wife, 2 daus, a nephew (Assistant Farmer - employee) and 3 other employees - 2 Ag labs and 1 domestic. There was also a lodger - 70 yr old Ann Bath.
Birthplace recorded as Stoke Fleming in the 1911 census but FreeBMD shows only one James born in Totnes RD around 1850 so I don't think I have combined 2 (a James Trant born in Plympton St Mary's RD in 1851 died in 1881).
On the 1911 census James and Phillipa claimed to have had 3 children in total of whom 2 had died, but they had two living with them! (Edith and Charles Manning)

The 1911 census shows James and Phillipa had had 3 children and 2 were still living. Two siblings were with their parents at the time of the census, and Annie was still living according to the date for her death given on a gravestone in Diptford. Perhaps James meant 3 still alive and 2 had died.
