Gender Male Occupation From 1851 to 1871 Sittingbourne, Kent, England [1] Carpenter - George seems to have had a go at setting up his own business as a builder.
In 1868 he put in a tender for "additions and alterations to malthouse, Preston-next-Faversham, for Messrs. Shepherd, Neame and Co.". The 7 tenders ranged from £2 875 to £3 866. George's was the lowest but was not accepted - but the one that was was for only £20 more. Possibly his tenders were generally too low, for his buisness was not succesful, since in 1869 he went bankrupt. (In various papers including Kentish Gazette - Tuesday 12 October 1869)
In 1870 when his new-born baby died he was recorded as a master carpenter.

I can't be certain the G. Goatham was this George, but given there is evidence he had ventured from being a carpenter to a builder by 1869 it seems probable.
