Occupation 1861 72, High Street, Chatham, Kent, England Victualler - With Samuel at the time of the census were his wife, 'son', 3 daughters, 3 shown as visitors, being a nurse maid and two Atkins children (like Fanny born Aylesford - maybe orphaned relations?), a house servant, a pot boy and a lodger (a ship's carpenter from County Durham).
Quite how long Samuel was a victualler for is not known (I have not attempted to research this); although only shown as such in one census, if he was for his whole time in Chatham then the births of his children suggest it was at least from 1856 to 1864.

In the 1881 census he was described as 'builder', but with nearly all houses of this period being brick-built, that probably meant the same or nearly so.

It appears that by 1891 Samuel and Fanny may have separated, because although Fanny was shown as a visitor in the home of her unmarried sister Lucy (where Samuel and Fanny's daughter was living), Fanny also died in Maidstone Reg District, not in Kingston where Samuel was then living. She may of course have gone to live with her sister and daughter to be cared for in ill health.
