Name Mary Ann GRIGGS Relationship with Teresa Ann GOATHAM Born 2 Sep 1804 Margate, Kent, England - dob from PR entry for baptism
Baptised 29 Oct 1804 St. John the Baptist Church, Margate, Kent, England - Is this the right baptism for my ancestor Mary Griggs? - see research notes (bottom of page)
From PR entry but dates not quite clear. Could be born 2nd Sep, baptised 29th October but alternatively could be born 29 Oct, baptised 4 Nov. The way the dates have been written I think the latter more likely, but such a small gap between birth and baptism would have been unusual, unless it was thought she might be close to death.
Gender Female Died 26 Dec 1870 Carters Cottages, Margate, Kent, England Cause: Strangulated hernia (11 days), Gangrene (7 days), operation (6 days) - GRO ref: Hyde, Mary q4 1870 aged 67 Thanet RD 2A 477
Death certificate for Mary Griggs Buried 29 Dec 1870 St. John the Baptist Church, Margate, Kent, England - KFHS CD 28
Mary, aged 67, no address - abode just given as "Margate"
Siblings 6 brothers and 2 sisters Patriarch & Matriarch William GRIGGS, b. Abt 1743, Margate, Kent, England , d. Aft 1762 (Age ~ 20 years) (Grandfather)
Mary SETTERFIELD, bap. Between 22 Aug 1756 and 23 Jul 1758, St. Mary the Virgin Church, Minster in Thanet, Kent, England , bur. 8 Sep 1824, St. Laurence’s Church, St. Lawrence in Thanet, Kent, England (Age ~ 68 years) (Grandmother)Notes - (Research):Named as 'Mary' everywhere (marriage, children's baptisms, 1841-61 censuses, dth cert and bur PR entry) apart from potential baptism. If I have the wrong baptism, then she may just be Mary not Mary Ann.
Possible parents shown. Mary appears not to have been "of age" when she married so parental consent would have been needed; do banns have her father's name? (KFHS CD 28 only has banns to 1806 and only marr not banns are on FMP, as at 13 Apr 2013)
Evidence for the parents shown:
- only Mary born close to 1803 with bapt at St. John's Margate - and 1851 and 1861 censuses show Mary as born Margate;
- no Mary bapt close to 1803 in St. Peters (Broadstairs) or St. Lawrences (Ramsgate)
- I have a DNA match with a descendant of Maria Griggs, sister of Charles Sladden Griggs. My relationship to the descendant appears to be 5th cousin once removed; it is 32 cM - larger than would be expected for this sort of relationship, but certainly possible. Significantly the match has researched all of their lines to some extent - most are in parts of the country where I have no ancestors, so unless there is an NPE, or some seriously erroneous research a Kent link is the most likely. Given that 32 cM is large for a 5c1r it gets significantly less likely if the match is a generation or 2 earlier.
Against:
- bapt is for a Mary Ann, Ann never found in any other records (weak against - if always called Mary);
- birth and bapt are in 1804, but dth and bur records suggest 1803 (weak against - small discrepancies not uncommon);
- no son called Charles (again weak against)
- Charles and Mary appear to have had another dau to whom they gave the name Mary Ann in 1824 (would be strong - rare for parents to give a 2nd child the same name as a living child - except I have not found burial of the 1st Mary Ann; looked at Marys as well as Mary Anns; only one who could be her in transcripts of parishes covered by FMP as at 13 Apr 2013 is in S Nicholas at Wade, 1803, an infant BUT a Mary Griggs was bapt at St Nicholas in 1803 so the burial was almost certainly that Mary). Did they have such a daughter? - she was baptised only about 3 months after a Sarah Ann Hyde.
RESEARCH TO DO:
What happened to Mary Ann Griggs born 1804 if she didn't marry Robert i.e. is there any other marriage or a burial that could be her?
If it wasn't Mary Ann, dau of Charles and Mary, who marr Robert then where was her baptism? - check free church baptisms.
Other alternatives:
Mary - bapt St John the Baptist - 1798 dau of Stephen and Elizabeth - maybe she adjusted her age to be younger than her husband?
Mary - bapt Birchington - 1800 dau of John and Mary
