Notes - 1891 - Mary was living with her Uncle Peter Cornwell, a farmer, and his family in Primrose Lane, Bredgar. (Her mother was in the county lunatic asylum, her father possibly in the workhouse!)
According to the book "Wood: A Family of Kent" (Charles Woo, 2015) both of her parents were alcoholics, though as it also wrongly claims they were both ultimately in the workhouse, whereas in fact both died in the lunatic asylum, it is not clear that this is trustworthy information. It certainly seems possible though - Mary Ann's mother's grandmother (and my 3 x gt grandmother) died of liver disease, with an excessive consumption of alcohol the most likely cause. Mary Ann's mother's grandmother may have been a bad influence on Mary Ann's mother: the latter was living with her grandmother as a girl of 14 at the time of the 1841 census. I don't know what happened to Mary Ann's grandmother - as an unmarried mother she may have needed to work to support herself, and so passed her child to her mother to look after, or she may have married a man who did not want her illegitimate child as part of the family, or a combination of the two. Alternatively, she may have died. With such a common name it is hard to be sure.
The following year she married Thomas Stephen WOOD. Thomas' father was a farmer of 359 acres, employing 9 men & 7 boys in 1861. The family lived at the Farm House, Swan St., Bredgar.
