- At the time of the 1939 register Lawrence was in a convalescence home in Deal. I have seen a reference to this as for members of the printing profession, but in 1939 the range of occupations shown was wide, including men who were labourers, policemen, transport workers (on buses and railway), a plumber, polishers, general labourers. Some were young men, some retired. A few women with occupations (shop manageress, book folding, nursing) were noted, but others were house wives - "unpaid domestic duties" (though a home like this if it had been limited to one trade for the men may well have also cared for their wives).

Given Lawrence's clear desire to be involved with his illegitimate son Eric, it seems to me surprising that it was another 6 months before he and Edith married. Both were under age; I guess there was opposition from one or both sets of parents. Both were still underage when they married, and the ages were not 'adjusted' to disguise this, so the parents must have given permission then. What may or may not be significant is that Lawrence's father died the same quarter that Eric was born; maybe it was he who was opposed to the marriage.
