GRO ref: GOATHAM, Herbert George q4 1888 Thanet RD 2a 902; GRO online index shows mother's maiden name as Hyde
Baptised 18 Nov 1888 All Saints’ Church, Westbrook, Kent, England - From the PR entry (image on FMP)
In the PR of St. John the Baptist Church, Margate but shown as taking place at All Saints. The present All Saints' was built in 1894 i.e. 6 years after Herbert was baptised, but the location is not a mistake. Many new churches would have been preceeded by temporary buildings, and this was the case here - a "mission church" was erected in 1874. The fact that the baptism is in St. John's PR suggests that Westbrook was not by then a parish in its own right.

Gender Male Census 5 Apr 1891 Fern House, High Street, Garlinge, Margate, Kent, England Census 31 Mar 1901 Fern House, High Street, Garlinge, Margate, Kent, England Occupation 1911 Margate, Kent, England Baker's van man - "Worker At Home"
Military Service Between 1914 and 1919 Private in the army in WW1 - Herbert's service records have not survived but we can glean some information from other sources.
Picture is Herbert with his wife Alice and 2 daughters Dorothy and "young" Alice.
It was presumably taken when Herbert was home on leave, as his medal index card shows he first entered a theatre of war, i.e. first set foot on foreign soil, on 8 Sep 1915. At this date his younger daughter was not yet aged 7 months; clearly the younger daughter in the photo is older than this. He may have joined up significantly earlier than this, and served in England for a while.
He served first with the Army Service Corps (A.S.C.), that part of the army that dealt with supplies, both of horses, other transport and the massive quantities of food needed. As a baker's van man before the war this experience may have made him well suited to transporting goods. However, he did not stay in the A.S.C. for the duration, later transferring to the East Lancashire Regiment. His medal card shows that when he went abroad it was to Western Europe (indicated by no. (1) ).
Residence From 1936 to 1939 19, Glebe Road, Garlinge, Margate, Kent, England - Living at 19 Glebe Rd, Garlinge (Kelly's Dierectory, 1936 and 1939)
Also from the 1939 register; Herbert and George had their two sons living with them (I think - Percy's entry open but one closed as at 16 Dec 2016)
