Name Robert GOATHAM Relationship with Teresa Ann GOATHAM Born Abt 1736 Baptised 28 Sep 1736 St. John the Baptist Church, Margate, Kent, England - From PR entry (image on FMP, viewed 18 Mar 2017)
(clearly 28th, not 23rd as I had from KFHS transcribed data)
Gender Male Occupation From 1750 to 1780 Mariner - Robert was described as a mariner, when he married Mary Shakleton in 1775.
The petition to Trinity House that he made in 1810 provides more details:
"That your petitioner Robt. Goatham was bred to the Sea, and served there as Commander in the Merchant Service in the Cadiz and Tennerif Trade, ..."(Approximate dates)
Residence 1775 Bermondsey, London, England - Robert was described as of the parish of St. Mary Magdalene's in Bermondsey when he married Mary Shakleton in 1775.
POW 2 Aug 1778 Brest, France Landed after being taken prisoner POW 1779 Vitré, Bretagne, France POW From Dec 1779 to Apr 1780 Angers, France Occupation From 1780 to 1810 River Thames, London, England Trinity Pilot - Robert was described as a pilot of Rotherhithe in his will (written 1804).
The petition to Trinity House that he made in 1810 provides more details:
"... and for the last Thirty years as a Licensed Trinity Pilot is now distressed and infirm through old(?) Age, his Wife aged 77 years"
Since he lived at Rotherhithe, I think Robert must have been piloting ships into London.
"For the last thirty years ..." means since about 1780, yet according to an LMA leaflet (p.6, 2A) pilots had to be under 35 when first licensed.
In addition a pilot had to have British nationality, have several years' experience as a watch-keeping officer of a ship and hold a foreign-going Master Mariner's certificate (or Naval certificate of service).
To be investigated further
Residence 1804 Rotherhithe, Surrey, England - At the time he wrote his will
Will 29 Oct 1804 Written Residence Abt 1809 Queen Street, Rotherhithe, Surrey, England - At the time a list of pilots was compiled, included in 'Instructions to Masters of Ships', published in 1809.
Trinity House Petition 18 Jul 1810 - Made a petition for assitance for himself and his wife when he was 74, his wife 77, being distressed and infirm through age.
to be transcribed
In applying to Trinity House for help Robert was following in the steps of his older brother, Edward, and was to be followed by his nephew, Robert, son of Edward.
Residence 1813 Mile End Old Town, Stepney, London, England At the time he died Died Jan 1813 Buried 20 Jan 1813 St. Dunstan and All Saints’ Church, Stepney, Middlesex, England - Robert signed his will in 1804; it was proved 1813. Given the date that the will was proved, and given that he describes himself as of"perfect health" when he wrote his will, it is most likely that he died late 1812.
Probate 9 Feb 1813 Prerogative Court of Canterbury, London, England Occupation Tenerife, Spain Mariner - In his petition to Trinity House Robert described himself as working in the Tenerife trade.
Occupation Cádiz, Spain Mariner - In his petition to Trinity House Robert described himself as working in the Cadiz trade.
Siblings 2 brothers and 3 sisters Patriarch & Matriarch GOATHAM, d. Yes, date unknown (4 x Great Grandfather)
Mary CURLING, d. Yes, date unknown (Great Grandmother)Notes - (Research):I believe it was this Robert, a pilot of Rotherhithe, who wrote a will in 1804 which was proved in 1813. Rotherhithe is only about 2 miles from Stepney and Bermondsey where Robert's 2 marriages took place, and also from Depford where the will-writer Robert had a niece.
In addition, I believe that the Judith Goatham who married in Rotherhithe was the sister of this Robert.
And, now having seen an entry for Robert in a Trinity House petitions index, I know that he was shown as aged 74 in 1810 which ties in with the date of baptism.
Who were the people besides Robert's wife that he left bequests to in his will?
Lydia and Maria Thompson? - no relationship shown suggests that these may have been friends, or possibly relations of one of Robert's wives.
Good candidates to be the Lydia and Maria are the daughters of John and Lydia Thompson baptised at St. Mary, Rotherhithe on 21 Sept 1797 - Lydia was born Jun 21 1795; Maria was a more common age for baptism at 26 days old.
Aside: of the 50 baptisms on the same and the preceeding page, from Aug 25 to Oct 13 1797, only 2 others were born before 1797, the other 47 ranging in age from 2 days to 131 days old of which 25 (i.e. half) were from 20 to 29 days.
Niece Elizabeth Soper
Did one of Robert's sisters marry a Soper, or was this the married name of Robert's neice? Perhaps she was the daughter of his sister Judith, Deptford being near Rotherhithe.
A William and Elizabeth Soper had a child Matia baptised in Jul 1794, a son John baptised in Mar 1795 and another son Benjamin in Aug 1796, all in Rotherhithe; and again probably the same couple had a daughter Jane, baptised Jul 1800, a son George Francis baptised in 1802, and a daughter Harriet Hamlyn Oct 1804, all in Rotherhithe.
This would seem to be the William Soper, mariner, and Elizabeth Hamlyn who married at St Katharine The Virgin and Martyr Church, near the Tower of London, on 24 Sep 1785.
Probably a different couple had several children baptised in St. Nicholas' Church, Deptford around the same time: William in Nov 1785, John 13 May 1787, Sarah 10 Apr 1789, Thomas Howell 1 Mar 1791, Geo 26 Oct 1792, Robert in Mar 1796, Elisa in Oct 1797.
One of the above couples may have been the parents of John Matthew, baptised 2 Jan 1780 at St. Mary's Rotherhithe.

Father John GOATHAM, bap. 16 Apr 1693, St. Laurence’s Church, St. Lawrence in Thanet, Kent, England , d. Bef 1770 (Age ~ 76 years) Mother Anne DIGGES, bap. 14 Apr 1700, St. John the Baptist Church, Margate, Kent, England , d. Oct 1770, Margate, Kent, England (Age ~ 70 years) Married 25 Feb 1723/24 St. Benet’s Church, Paul's Wharf, City of London, London, England - Register entry "John Goatham of Ramsgate Kent B and Ann Digges of Margate Kent S by LC" - no indication of why the marriage was taking place in London.
With John being of Ramsgate, and Ann of Margate, it is not clear why they married in London. According to the website of St. Benet's "Until 1867 St Benet was the parish church of Doctors Commons, a legal institution which, among its other activities, could provide facilities for hasty marriages. There is a record, for instance, of some 1300 weddings taking place in one year alone in the Eighteenth Century." But it is not clear why they would have wanted a hasty marriage. Was Anne underage or one (or both) marrying against their father's will? Or was it just a romantic thing to do, to travel (presumably around the coast and up the Thames) to London?
