Personal Information    |    PDF

  • Name Robert GRIGGS
    Relationshipwith Teresa Ann GOATHAM
Born Abt 1842  Margate, Kent, England See the place on a map and other information about it - if available (many more will be in time); also all individuals with events at this location
    • From the 1851 census, where shown as aged 8. His army papers show him as aged 22 yrs and 8 months when he attested; this suggests he was born in Feb or the first few days of March, but that would make him 9 at the time of the census, so I suspect he was a few months younger. This would also be more likely with a baptism in September.
Baptised 18 Sep 1842  Margate, Kent, England See the place on a map and other information about it - if available (many more will be in time); also all individuals with events at this location
    • From FamilySearch (transcribed data)
Shows Robert, son of William and Martha Griggs
Fits perfectly with Robert as shown in the censuses, but there is no entry in the PR for St. John's. In the BTs but not the PRs or baptised at another church?
On FS from LDS film 1835618; this has both ATs and BTs for St John's but ATs only to 1812 so it must be from the BTs. It looks like the PRs and BTs were kept separately, rather than the BTs being a copy of the PRs, and the baptism was accidentally omitted from the PRs.
    Gender Male
    Education 1851

Private in the 43rd.Regiment of Light Infantry
    • In October 1872 Robert was discharged as unfit for further military service. This was due to him suffering from tuberculosis, which had originated in an attack of pleurisy the previous June.

    • Shown as his residence at the time of his death in the burial register.
This does not necessarily mean he was there as he couldn't afford to live elsewhere, he may have been due to being ill. Workhouses provided the only hospital care available to most people at this time. His intended place of residence when discharged from the army was Church Street, Margate.
