Jane EVANS
Set As Default Person -
Name Jane EVANS Relationship
with Teresa Ann GOATHAM Born 25 Jul 1839 Abbey Street, Faversham, Kent, England
- GRO ref: Evans, Jane q3 1839 Faversham RD 5 152; GRO online index shows mother's maiden name as Barrow
Details from birth certificate, which shows her father as Charles Evans, a policeman. It was not he who registered the birth, though, but the occupier of a house (the house where Jane was born?) in Abbey Street.
Gender Female Died 26 Jul 1839 Abbey Street, Faversham, Kent, England
Cause: Fit of convulsions - GRO ref: Evans, Jane q3 1839 Faversham RD 5 112; GRO online index shows age at death as 0
Death certificate shows she died aged 17 hours. Whilst convulsions in a baby may often be as a result of a fever, in a new-born baby the likely cause is a lack of oxygen during birth. Like her birth, the informant for the registration was Susan Terry.

, d. 20 Dec 1880, 7, Draysons Square, Faversham, Kent, England
(Age 63 years)
Other Partners: William GOATHAM m. 15 May 1841Married Bef 1841 - Assuming Charles and Charlotte did marry, it must have been before Charlotte remarried in 1841, and probably before their daughter Jane was born in 1839.
No marriage found on FreeBMD (covers July 1837 on), in the indexes to Kent marriages on FMP, nor on Ancestry which covers much of London.
No death of a Charles Evans found near Faversham, the only deaths of Evans registered in the area in the right timeframe have the wrong forename and seem too old to be likely: James (Evans or Evians) in Hollingbourn 1838, aged 47 and John in Blean RD in 1840, aged 77. This begs the question: did he exist? If he was created to disguise an illegitimate birth (which seems unlikely given how common they were and how generally accepted by the working class) Charlotte seems to have gone to great lengths to maintain the fiction.
