    Notes 
    • Frances was one of 4 children of William and Sarah, a Preventive Guardsman of the Coastguard service, baptised in Salcombe 1851-1859.  Coastguard staff moved around the country and although William was living in Devon he was born in Maidstone. The family were living in Salcombe at the time of the 1861 census, with 2 children; the youngest had died earlier in the year, and the other was visiting Coatsworth relations in Maidstone (staying with her uncle Edward and his family, next door to her grandparents and younger uncles). By 1871 William had retired and he was living with his Devonian wife and Frances back in Maidstone.
