Charles GOATHAM
Set As Default Person -
Name Charles GOATHAM Relationship
with Teresa Ann GOATHAM Born 4 Jun 1859 Molash, Kent, England
- GRO ref: Goatham, Charles q2 1859 East Ashford RD 2a 514; GRO online index shows mother's maiden name as Keeler. (Also indexed as p.314 on FMP, but looking at image of index 514 is correct)
Actual date and month from the 1939 registration (image on FMP, viewed 19 Dec 2016) (year shown there as 1860, clearly from registration can't be)
Gender Male Residence 1861 Greenstreet, Teynham, Kent, England
- Charles senior with his wife Esther and their baby son, Charles junior.
Residence 1871 Sheldwich, Kent, England
- Charles was with his parents, Charles senior and Esther
Residence 1881 Vernon Hill House, Bishops Waltham, Hampshire, England
- Charles senior and junior with Charles senr.'s wife Esther were all servants, living in in the home of the Elrington family.
One of the Elrington sons was born in Selling in 1872; Selling is only about 3 miles from Sheldwich where Charles and family were living in 1871 so I guess they started working for the Elringtons in Kent and moved with them to Hampshire. In 1891 Charles junior, now married, had moved away, though only by about 5 miles; his parents were still living in Vernon Hill House and working for the Elringtons.
Occupation From 1881 to 1914 London, England
Groom / coachman - Whereas Charles' father became a groom / coachman after trying a variety of different occupations, Charles seems to have worked as such from the start, only temporarily becoming an ag lab after returning to Kent at the start of the C20th.
In the censuses: groom (1881); coachman groombe (1891); coachman domestic (1901); also shown as a coachman in the 1914 probate calendar index entry for his father.
Residence 1891 100 Acres, Soberton, Hampshire, England
- Probably coachman to Stanhope Rashleigh, a clergyman and his family in a separate dwelling at 100 Acres, and listed immediately prior to Charles and his wife.
Residence 1901 Coachman's Cottage, Vernon Hill House, Bishops Waltham, Hampshire, England
- With his father now retired Charles junior had returned to working for the Elringtons, as their coachman, but now he and Sarah had a cottage of his own rather than "living in".
Residence 1911 Primrose Lane, Bredgar, Kent, England
- Back in Kent, in a 4 roomed house in Bredgar, with his wife.
As an only son, he had possibly returned to following his father's death in 1901, in order to look after his elderly mother. Given that his parents lived in Primrose Lane it may well be that Charles and Sarah had moved in to live with his mother. (The 1901 census shows an adjacent entry to Charles senior in Primrose Lane was for one Daniel Moss and his family; although Charles junior was the census entry after a Moss family in the 1911 census there were a couple of Moss families between him and the aforementioned Daniel and his wife).
And the temporary change of occupation suggested by the censuses suggest this move may not have been without a good reason.
Occupation 1911 Farm labourer - He was now working as an ag lab rather than a coachman which sounds like a step down. Maybe he could not find work as a coachman - was there less available, or at least none near enough to Bredgar?
Since the 1914 probate calendar entry (for his father) shows him as a coachman it does suggest that being a farm labourers was a temporary measure when he couldn't find work as a coachman.
Residence From 1939 to 1943 37, Ivy Street, Rainham, Kent, England
- His home at the time of the 1939 register and of his death.
Listed first in 1939 was one Alice R Sills, so it appears Charles, a widower, may have been boarding (or lodging) with her.

, d. Mar Q 1958, Sittingbourne Reg Dist, Kent, England
(Age 86 years)
Other Partners: Charles Henry SILLS m. Dec Q 1895Married Bef 1939 - It seems that Alice and her husband had parted by 1898, and Charles was living with Alice by the time of the 1939 register. He was listed after her, as though boarder or lodger, but it seems probable she was more than that to him. From his will it is clear her family had become his family: he left everything to Alice, but should she have pre-deceased him then to her granddaughters. (Alice's husband left nothing to the son they appear to have had together, nor to his daughters, so there was a place free to effectively be their grandfather).
