Birth registration of Henrietta May GOATHAM
GRO register entryBaptised 16 Aug 1908 St. Mary’s Church, Chatham, Kent, England - From PR entry (imageon CityArk, viewed 1 Jan 2016)
"Alleged Date of Birth: May 5th 1899, Baptised: August 16, No. 179, May Henrietta Dr of, parents: Arthur Charles & Annie, Goatham, abode: 2 Bryant Street, [father's occupation left blank], ceremony performed by E. G. Burr"
Gender Female Residence Between 1930 and 1957 67, Heathfield Road, The Grove, Wandsworth Common, London, England - Electoral rolls from 1930 to 1957 show May Henrietta Goatham at 67 Heathfield Road, shown as 'Rw' and '-'.
Also at the address in the registers from 1930 to 1939 were the Morgan 'family'; Charles Lewis and Elsie Winifred were there in the first and last year, and also in the last year Edgar Campbell was there. (I have not looked at all the years in between for the Morgans).
In 1948 'May' was the only person listed at the address in the electoral register, in 1949 James Irvine Black was with her. In 1950 the Morgans were back in the house with May and James. In 1951 it was just May and the Morgans.
(From London Electoral Registers on Ancestry, from those held at the LMA)
Henrietta was also recorded at this address in the 1939 register. In addition the grant of probate for James Irvine Black shows that this was James' home at the time of his death and that May Goatham was living at the same address at the time (1952).
The apparent multiple occupancy of this house means that it would be particularly unsafe to assume a romantic liason between James and May, they could just have had a platonic relationship.
It does, though, appear from James' will that they were close.
Occupation 1939 Domestic duties - Many wives and others, including the wife of the couple in whose house Henrietta lived, were shown as having 'unpaid domestic duties'. Henrietta was simply shown as having 'domestic duties', implying she was paid.
(from the 1939 register)
Executor / Trustee 20 Dec 1952 London, England Granted probate for the estate of James Irvine BLACK - "Black James Irvine of 67 heathfield-road Wandsworth London died 8 October 1952 at St. Johns Hospital Battersea London Probate London 20 December to Ronald Allen commercial clerk and May Goatham spinster. Effects £3027 15s. 2d."
Residuary beneficiary 20 Dec 1952 In the will of James Irvine Black - The other bequests were small so May would have received most of James' estate.

In 1908 Arthur and Annie's oldest 3 daughters were baptised, between the death of their Arthur (1907) and of Annie (the mother) (1909). Strangely, the two youngest, Eva Alexandra and Arthur Charles, were not baptised at this time.
Subsequent records (marriage, 1939 register entry and death) can be found for 'Eva Alexandra', and with a unique pair of Christian names for the Goathams, there is no doubt the references are for this daughter of Arthur and Annie. The idea that both these children had died before their elder siblings were baptised can therefore be ruled out.
As Eva was living there is no reason to supposed Arthur Charles had died. However, no further record has been found for Arthur (but writing in 2020 I am sure he can no longer be living).
Perhaps Annie could not cope with 5 young children after the death of her husband and the youngest two went into care or were fostered / adopted. There was no formal adoption at this period and it seems to have varied whether children used their birth surname or that of their foster parents. I suspect Arthur may have used a different surname, and hence his absence from records.
