Eliza GOATHAM
Set As Default Person -
Name Eliza GOATHAM Relationship
with Teresa Ann GOATHAM Born Abt 1821 Bredgar, Kent, England
- - Pos Older (B 1815-21)
Baptised 23 Dec 1821 St. John the Baptist Church, Bredgar, Kent, England
- From PR entry (image on FMP, viewed 18 Jun 2019)
Abode Bredgar, father George shown as a carpenter.
Gender Female Occupation 1841 Friningham, Thurnham, Kent, England
Servant - In the house of Henry (35, of independant means) and Julia Duppa (aged 21). As well as 2 other servants (one male, one femaile) two others of independant means were present - possibly visitors: Daniel Thorndike, aged 35, a Captain in the Royal Artillery and Bridges [sic - clearly Bridges, not Bridget] Faunce, a 40 year old woman.
Recorded as Eliza Goatum, aged 20 in 1841 census.
(Ages above 15 supposed to be rounded down to the nearest multiple of 5).
Occupation 1851 9, Beacon Terrace, Tormoham, Devon, England
Servant - At the time of the census Eliza was in the home of lodging house keeper, Mary Sims and 2 of her daughters.
It's not clear whether Eliza and a groom were servants based at the lodging house or to a lady visitor who was staying there (44 year old Eleanor Wyott, married, b Grosvenor Sq, London)
Occupation 1861 The Rectory, Hull Road, Sigglesthorne, Yorkshire, England
Lady's maid - At the time of the 1861 census Eliza was living in the Rectory as a servant with the elderly Rector, William Hnery Edward BENTINCK, aged 77 and his 79 year old wife Elizabeth Frances. Also present were two visitors, one a retired housekeeper, the other, a clergyman's daughter a companion. There were eight others described as servants living in, as well as a gardener and his wife next door!
One of the others described as a servant was not a domestic servant but a school mistress. The primary school in Sigglesthorne is a Church of England one, the Rector may have been involved in setting it up, and was probably in recruiting the school mistress. She was only aged 20, so perhaps he felt it incumbent on him to provide a home for her - or wanted to keep on eye on her.
The groom, like the Rector, was from Middlesex but everyone else was born in Yorkshire or Lincolnshire - what was Eliza doing there? Perhaps she responded to an advert, and chose to work far from home in order to see more of the country.
Occupation 1871 12, Robertson Terrace, Hastings, Sussex, England
Lady's maid Visiting 1881 9, Lower Coombe Street, Croydon, Surrey, England
- At the time of the census Eliza was with William Cooper and his family. William had been married to Rebecca Goatham (Eliza's half sister). Age in '81 given as 50
Occupation 1881 Lady's companion - From the 1881 census, but since she was visiting her brother-in-law at the time of the census, to whom she was a companion I don't know.
Occupation 1891 Renpole(?) House, Main Road, Shirehampton, Gloucestershire, England
Lady's maid - Eliza was a servant to Clara Phillipa Miles - a single woman with 6 servants living in, as well as a gardener and coachman in cottages!
Will 19 Jun 1893 Written Residence 1901 42, Haldon Road, Wandsworth, London, England
- At the time of the 1901 census Eliza was described as "living on own means". Presumably she had now retired. Her age was recorded as 76, though I believe she was actually 79.
Died 18 Nov 1907 “Newlands”, Roseacre, Bearsted, Kent, England
Cause: Senile decay - GRO ref: Goatham, Eliza aged 89 q4 1907 Maidstone RD 2a 455
I am fairly sure this one, no other fits and her age was not always consistently recorded. Probate calendar shows she was a spinster, also agreeing with this Eliza. Now confirmed by image of death registration.
Details from death registration (image of GRO copy)
Shown as spinster and annuitant at her death. The informant was her niece, Mary Ann BARNABY, who was by this time a widow and living at the same address as her aunt.
Buried 22 Nov 1907 The Cemetery, Chatham, Kent, England
- From burial register (transcribed data on KFHS CD 40)
Probate 28 Dec 1907 London, England

Notes - Eliza was never in the same place in two consecutive censuses. It seems likely, therefore, that she had various other positions which are not recorded here.

There was also a marriage of a Sarah Hunt to a Richard Friend in Teynham in 1829, but given that this Sarah would by then have been aged about 38 I don't think it was likely to have been her.
