Name Herbert GOATHAM Relationship with Teresa Ann GOATHAM Born 18 Feb 1862 Church Street, Faversham, Kent, England - GRO ref: Goatham, Herbert q1 1862 Faversham RD 2a 621; GRO online index shows mother's maiden name as Hunt
The birth appeared in the family notices in the 'Kentish Gazette' of Tues 25 Feb. 1862 (p.5, col. 4):
"Goatham. '97Feb. 18, at Faversham, the wife of Mr. C. Goatham, of a son."
Birth certificate for Herbert Goatham Gender Male Education From 1869 to 1874 The National School, Faversham, Kent, England Schoolboy - A scholar at the time of the 1871 census, Herbert had been admitted to Faversham National School, in April 1869 and left 27 Apr 1874.
(from school records in Maidstone Archives)
Census 2 Apr 1871 15, Partridge Lane, Faversham, Kent, England Occupation Bef 1874 Hop picking - I have no proof of this, but it seems probable that as a boy Herbert would have gone with his mother and siblings hop-picking. There still are hop fields close to Faversham and so they could have gone from home, walking to and from the fields.
(The only evidence of the family hop picking of which I am aware is his mother's death)
Occupation From 1874 to 1916 Garlinge, Margate, Kent, England Baker - (Approximate dates)
Was offered to stay longer at school or to start work and have a Bible - he chose the latter. Apprenticed to a baker in Margate, who I think had no children, so that he later took over business from him, becoming a Master Baker. Bakery - 'H Goatham and Son(s?) - baker and confectioner - Garlinge'.
(info. from Auntie Ethel - his daughter)
The 1881 census shows that Herbert was then a journeyman baker living at 1 Westbrook Place, Margate with Master Baker Edwin Bushell and his family; by 1891 Herbert was employed as "Baker's Manager"; his wife's occupation was shown as "helps husband".
He had a "journeyman baker" living and working with him in 1901 and
in 1911 he was described as "Baker and confectioner".
I believe I was told his bakery went bankrupt during WW1, though it could be that I have the date wrong as there seems to be evidence of the Baker's business at a later date. He gave too many cakes to poor children, according to his daughter, Ethel but his grandson Herbert Osborn disagreed, putting the bankruptcy down to too much drinking! (Herbert Osborn was less than 3 years younger than his aunt and I fear may have been more realistic about the reason. I don't, though, think Auntie Ethel would have imagined the giving away of cakes, but I think it may not have been the cause of her father's business failing). His cause of death, oesophageal cancer, is more common in those who drink heavily and in those who smoke, and especially in those who do both - 90% of one form of the cancer can be attributed to these factors, so it seems likely he was a heavy drinker.
His son Charles (my grandfather) worked with him at one time, but was in Balham by the time the 1919 electoral roll was compiled; it may be that the business had not actually folded by then but could no longer support two couples.
It seems likely he either kept the business going until 1925 or he may have found other work for some years, as he was still living in Fern House in 1925 - though he was then unemployed. I have a copy of his birth certificate issued "for the purposes of the Unemployment Insurance Act 1920" in Feb. 1925, so it must be between then and 1934 that he and his wife moved to one of the Alexandra Homes.
H. Goatham and Son's bakers cart
I believe the person on the left (as your look at the photo) is my grandfather, Charles Robert Goatham. I don't know who the other is - possibly his brother Herbert (Bert).Census 3 Apr 1881 1, Westbrook Place, Westbrook, Kent, England Residence From 1883 to 1885 Westbrook Cottages, Westbrook, Kent, England - He was living in Westbrook Cottages when his first 2 children were born - apparently at no. 6 in 1883 when Clara was born but no. 2 some two and a half years later when Charles appeared. (Had they moved or had the cottages been renumbered?)
No address is given in the baptismal entry for Herbert George, on 18 Nov 1888, but although in the St. John's PR this is shown as having taken place at All Saints, which was very close to Westbrook Cottages so I guess the family were still living there. So it was probably between then and the time of the census in 1891 that the family moved to Garlinge.
Residence From 1890 to 1925 Fern House, High Street, Garlinge, Margate, Kent, England - (Approximate dates)
He was living at Fern House in 1891, 1901 and 1911; with wife, 4 children and a servant - the servant being a "journeyman baker" in 1891. (1891 ancestry index: surname Thane!) Also recorded as his address when his daughter Elizabeth died in 1897.
Just with second wife and his children Charles and Ethel in 1911. Curiously both Herbert and Sarah are shown as of at Quex Dairy Cottage, Garlinge at the time Sarah died in 1907.
Census 5 Apr 1891 Fern House, High Street, Garlinge, Margate, Kent, England Miscellaneous 20 Mar 1894 High Street, Garlinge, Margate, Kent, England Witnesses of mudered children - On 20th March 1894 a young widow, Sarah Tucker, was discovered lying on her bed, having murdered her two young children and attempted to kill herself.
Short reports can be read here and here.
A longer report (details to be added here) quotes Herbert has having seen Sarah Tucker the day before and having commented to his assistant how bad she looked. There is also a mention of Herbert and Sarah (his wife) being in the house shortly after the bodies were discovered - one person mentioned Sarah Goatham's screams as having brought him to the house.
Civic duty 1898 Garlinge, Margate, Kent, England Parish Councillor - I don't know quite when or for how long Herbert was on the Parish Council, but he was relected in 1898, as reported in a local paper:
Garlinge
Parish Meeting. - A parish meeting was held in the
National Schools, on Monday evening. The Vicar (the
Rev. George Collis) presided, and there were about 30
ratepayers present. The following members of the Coun-
cil were re-elected :- Mr. Herbert Goatham, baker 16
votes, Mr. W. Horton, labourer 18, Mr. S. Jezard, market
gardener 18, Mr. W. Scott, gardener 16, Mr. W. T. Solley,
14, and Messrs. H. Goodban, builder 18, and W. T. Stand-
ing, gardener 15, were the new members.

Census 31 Mar 1901 Fern House, High Street, Garlinge, Margate, Kent, England Census 2 Apr 1911 Fern House, High Street, Garlinge, Margate, Kent, England Residence Aft 1925 Alexandra Homes, Margate, Kent, England - Auntie Ethel said as a result of the bankruptcy they ended up living in what was known as "the home for derelicts" - I assumed it was a workhouse, but it appears it may have been the Alexandra Homes where he died. (These were almshouses - look very nice today, but maybe have improved since his time).
His widow and daughter Ethel were living there at the time of the 1939 registration.
Died 18 Apr 1934 33, Alexandra Homes, Margate, Kent, England Cause: Carcinoma of the oesophagus - The death was registered by his dau Ethel, present at the death, also of 33 Alexandra Homes.

Father Charles GOATHAM, b. Abt 1805, Bredgar, Kent, England , d. 24 Dec 1888, 2, Abbey Street, Faversham, Kent, England (Age ~ 83 years) Mother Sybilla HUNT, b. Abt 1817, Wormshill, Kent, England , d. Between 29 Aug 1887 and 4 Sep 1887, Hernhill Marshes, Hernhill, Kent, England (Age ~ 70 years) Married 31 May 1835 St. Mary’s Church, Chatham, Kent, England - Although both Charles and Sybella were shown as "otp" when they married in Chatham, I suspect that this was an address of convenience to enable them to be married here - see my notes about Medway marriages.
The witness James Goodhew may well have been the James Goodhew who would marry Charles' sister Maria two years later.
I have not found baptisms for most of Charles' and Sybilla's children; they do not seem to have been baptised at the Parish Church in Faversham. Maybe there is a clue in that in 1875 a Mr Goatham lent his van for conveying children to a Congreational Church picnic; had they started attending or at least having the children baptised at the Congregational Church? - to be investigated.
The marriage of Charles Goatham to Sybilla Hunt
Parish Register entry for the marriage of my gt gt grandparents (my only 2xgt grandparents to marry before the registration of BMDs began). This is from the registers for the now redundant Church of St. Mary the Virgin, Chatham, Kent.Occupation to 1887 Hop picking - From the records of the events surrounding Sybilla's death it is clear that she went hop-picking. She had probably done this many years, perhaps almost all of her life. She may well have even been taken along as a baby to the hop fields by her own mother.
During her married life Charles probably did not accompany her, due to his regular work, but even though living most of it in a town she was still close enough to hop fields to go hop picking from home. The children probably all went too, and assisted in hop picking once they were old enough.
