    • In the 'The Whitstable Times and Tankerton Press' (Sat. 11 Nov 1916, p. 6, col. 6) in the section entitled 'Sittingbourne' the second item was:
"Low spirits lead to suicide. - An
inquest was held by Mr. Coroner Harris, at Sit-
tingbourne, on Thursday with reference to the
death of William Alfred Gratham [sic], aged 39, of 2,
Queen Street. The widow found her husband
suspended by a piece of cord from the bedstead.
The poor fellow had been in low spirits for some
time, and he had been out of work, and in poor
health. In a note, found in his pocket it seemed
that he was jealous of his wife. A verdict of
"Suicide during temporary insanity" was re-
      turned."

Then, after 2 more pieces of news:
"Determined Suicide. - An inquest was
held at the Town Hall on Thursday evening,
before Mr. C. B. Harris, County Coroner, rela-
tive to the death of William Alfred Goatham,
      39, a labourer, of 2, Queen's Street, Sitting-
bourne. The evidence showed that at 5.30 on
Tuesday evening the widow returned home from
work, and on going upstairs to the bedroom
found her husband's body suspended by a cord
from the bedstead, and he was dead.
The man had done no work for several weeks,
and he had complained of pains in his chest.
He was also strange in his manner t times.
A note written by the deceased was found on
the body, and in it he seemed to be jealous of
his wife. A verdict of "Suicide during tem-
      porary insanity" was returned."
(the second article also appeared on the front page, col. 1, of The Faversham Mercury and North-East Kent Journal of 11 Nov 1916)

    Notes

    • As filled in the form shows Walter as "son" which should mean William's, but was probably intended to apply to son of Sarah - Sarah had been married 12 years, though not to William, and had 3 children by the marriage, so Walter was probably from this marriage. Not clear if Sarah had been widowed by the time of the census - it would appear not.
