Thomas Hughes BERRIBALL
Set As Default Person -
Name Thomas Hughes BERRIBALL Relationship
with Teresa Ann GOATHAM Born Mar Q 1847 Tavistock Reg Dist, Devon or Cornwall, England
- GRO ref: BERRIBALL, Thomas Hughes q1 1847 Tavistock RD 9 510
From the 1851 and 1861 censuses where shown as Thomas H aged 4 (with his mother) and Thomas Hughes aged 13 (with both parents)
Gender Male Residence From 1877 to 1891 Lower Torr, Whitchurch, Devon, England
- His address when he was informant for his mother's death.
With his wife, 3 daughters and his father in 1881, just 3 daughters and a son in 1891.
Occupation From 1881 to 1891 Lower Torr, Whitchurch, Devon, England
Farmer - Farming very close to where he grew up - Lower Torr was the very next entry after Walreddon Lodge on the 1881 census.
Farmer of 130 acres, there were 2 farm servants as well as 2 domestic servants living with the family in 1881, a housekeeper and 2 farm servants in 1891.
A Whitchurch Trade Directory recorded him as a farmer at Lower Tor in 1890 (Dartmoor Press info, precise publication not given) and I think an entry for a "Hugh Berriball" at Lower Tor in a Whitchurch Trade Directory of 1878 also referredto him (a Thomas at Middle Tor in that year was presumably his father).
Occupation From 1901 to 1911 Walreddon Farm, Whitchurch, Devon, England
Farm labourer - No acreage shown in the 1901 or 1911 censuses, but in the 1881 census (when it was farmed by Joseph Spry, father of the John referred to below) shows it as 230 acres. That was larger than the 170 acres recorded in the 1851 census when Joseph's father John had been the farmer: the Sprys and Berriballs had been neighbours for many years.
In 1901 it is clear that Lower Torr was still a separate farm - the Spry's had not taken over the land which Thomas had farmed.
Shown as "ordinary agricultural labourer" in 1901. As well as farmer John Spry and his wife and 2 infants, Thomas was living in on the farm as were also a young waggoner, a 13 year old boy who se occupation was described as "help on farm" and a 14 year old domestic general servant.
By 1911 John Spry and his wife had had 8 children, 7 of whom were still living, aged 1 to 11 all of them were living at home, but the 10 roomed house had room for 3 servants as well - Thomas, now described as "cowman on farm", a horseman and a domestic servant.
I don't know why Thomas was unable to continue to farm in his own right, but the early death of his wife cannot have helped as the role played by the farmer's wife could have been crucial to the enterprise.

Thomas Berriball to Marianne Vogwell, both of full age, bach and spinster, Thomas a labourer, no occ shown for Mary Ann, both resident in Whitchurch, fathers John Berriball and William Vogwell, both labourers.
Thomas Berriball and Mary Ann Vogwell both signed, as did witnesses, Joanna R(?)ich and George Vogwell.
Who was George Vogwell? - Mary's grandfather and uncle with this name were both dead by 1840, but she had 3 1st cousins with the name, so it was probably one of them (I haven't compared signatures to try to work out which)
