Philip TRANT

-
Name Philip TRANT Relationship with Teresa Ann GOATHAM Born Abt 1782 Frogmore, Devon, England - I suspect that Philip was a grandson of John and Dorothy, probably a son of their son and my direct ancestor William. William was living in the Frogmore area at the time Philip was born and there is a gap between the other children of his I know of, baptised in 1780 and 1785, which fits the approximate birth date of Philip of 1782 suggested by other evidence.
Alternatively, Philip may have been the son of William's brother John. I think he was almost certainly the son of one of these two brothers, or the son of a sibling; unless I am missing any siblings the only possible one would seem to be their sister Mary (2 other siblings had died in infancy, and one sister was married and no longer a Trant; I'm not sure if Mary was still living and unmarried in 1782).
There is no record of Philip's baptism in Sherford (where John's children were baptised) nor Charleton (where William's children were baptised) - I have browsed the register entries carefully, not just relied on indexes.
Both the families of William and John were mainly carpenters, like Philip. One of John's sons gave a son the name Philip, which might suggest John was Philip's father; one of William's sons moved to Plymouth, and brothers often seemed to travel in pairs, which might suggest William was the father!
