In the 1851 census there was a Philip Trant, aged 36, a shipwright in Plymouth. Does this same trade indicate a link to this William?
Investigating 'BMDs' show that this Philip was the son of a Philip born c 1782 in Frogmore. The 2 couples having children in Frogmore at this time were William and his wife and his probable brother John and his wife.
Philip could have been a son of either of them, though there is a slightly larger gap between Williams children in which another could have been born.
A tree on Ancestry favours John and Elizabeth as the parents - I don't know what, if any, evidence exists for this; Elizabeth's will does not mention a son Philip which makes it seem less likely that they were the parents.
Philip, the Plymouth shipwright, was too young to have learnt his trade from William, though, being aged only about 8 when William died. - (Research):I WAS only guessing that John and Dorothy were William's parents - but now found William's baptism.
It was where I had looked for it, but faint in the colour image now on FMP, which are much clearer than the old microfiche images, and it's right at the bottom of a page where the m/f quailty tends to be worst.
I'm quite strongly inclined to think that William (b c1745), father of my ancestor William (b 1778), was the brother of the John who married Elizabeth Foal.
I was showing that John as son of Philip and Sarah though noting that it may be a different John who married Elizabeth Foal. (The parents names weren't given in the PR when a John was bapt in East Allington and I haven't found the baptism of Wm c 1745) but changed that when I realised they had a son William who was not my ancestor; now finding my William just confirms that.
Reasons for thinking William and John brothers:
The grave of George, a son of Wm grave is right next to that of an Elizabeth nee Trant; Elizabeth was the dau of John Trant and Elizabeth nee Foal thus making her George's 1st cousin, if John and William were brothers. Also, there is a gravestone "intruding" between that of George Trant and his wife Grace; it is for a John and Elizabeth FOALE - pos the parents of the above Elizabeth Foal.The John Trant bapt in South Pool in 1743 had a sibling bapt in Sherford in 1752 - i.e. he would most likely have moved to Sherford with his parents, where they were eventually buried, so the family appear to have stayed there. If the John bapt in East Allington was the son of Philip and Sarah he had a sibling born in West Alvington in 1742, and the family remained there. It seems more likely that the John who was living in Sherford would marry a Sherford girl than the John who was in West Alvington.
NEXT:
* Look for the parents of the John bapt in East Allington in 1745;
* look for that John elsewhere (to see if he can be ruled him out as the husband of Eliz Foal)

Shown as 1741 and says date converted to NS.
Assuming this is correct it is unlikely the John Trant baptised in 1740 was the son of this couple, unless an error was made in when he was baptised.

I think that Philip born about 1782 in Frogmore was probably also a child of this marriage, otherwise a son of William's brother John (but with other children baptised Mar 1781 and Sep 1783 there was less of a gap to squeeze another in). See birth notes on Philip's page for my thoughts on this.
