James WILLCOCKS
Set As Default Person -
Name James WILLCOCKS Relationship
with Teresa Ann GOATHAM Born Abt 1812 Buckland Monachorum, Devon, England
- From the 1851 census where shown as aged 38
Gender Male Occupation From 1841 to 1851 Ag lab - Living at Lower Lake, Meavy in 1841 and in Horrabridge (Buckland Monachorum parish) by 1845, still there 1851; probably working very close to these locations.
Died Mar Q 1855 Tavistock Reg Dist, Devon or Cornwall, England
- Can't find James in the 1861 or 1871 census, so this was probably his death:
GRO ref: Willcocks, James q1 1855 Tavistock RD 5b 331; GRO online index shows age at death as 50.
The burial entry both adds weight to this - and detracts from it. It was in Horrabridge, consistent with where he lived; it gives his age as 50, somewhat older than suggested by the census. I still think it is probably him, with the age wrong (somewhere).
Buried 21 Jan 1855 Wesleyan Chapel, Horrabridge, Devon, England
- From DFHS index (on FMP, viewed 10 Nov 2012)
Notes - (Research):A James Willcocks was shown as the lessee of a house (unnamed, with land - 26 perches), owned by Sir Ralph Lopes, in the tithe apportionment for Buckland Monachorum (see the FODA website). This also shows the occupier as William Petherick, who the 1841 census shows as an ag lab, living at Cuxton Cottage.
However, there was another James Willcocks, a butcher, living in Buckland Monachorum parish in both the 1841 and 1851 censuses; not only that, but he lived in the Cuxton area and it seems probable that he was the lessee of the cottage. Not only does the location of the cottage suggest it, but a butcher would usually be better off than an ag lab and therefore more likely to be leasing property.
(I guess the 2 James may have been cousins - both gave a son the unusual name Ambrose, this James in 1831, the other bapt 1836)

Willcocks, James to Jewry, Mary
(there appear to have been two Willcocks = Jury families having children at the same time in Tavistock RD which makes it more difficult to discover if this couple had children who died in infancy and are missing from the censuses)
