    • Estimate based on the date of his marriage, and taking into account when his (assumed) sisters were baptised and years where BTs survive which don't include his baptism. Place assumed, based on assumption of his parents.

      Parents:
The fact Nicholas named his first son Mathew, not a particularly common name so probably after his father, and his 2nd daughter Joan, could be named after his mother, suggests he was their son. No other Cudlips were having children baptised in Bickleigh around the time Nicholas is likely to have been born. Putting this evidence together I think the evidence is strong that Nicholas was the son of Matthew and Johan.

      Re date:
A tree on Ancestry shows Nicholas as born c 1682 Bickleigh - no evidence given, I suspect this is a guess; I have looked in the BTs from 1674 to 1690 and not found an entry, so he was probably baptised in one of the years for which the BTs do not survive, i.e. 1679 or 82, or (less likely as would be unusually young for marriage at this time) 1685 or 1686.
Also, Matthew and Johan married May 1674, had their first known child about 20 months after this, another (Johan) about 25 months after that. As Johan survived infancy it is probable if they had another then they would have been born about 18 months to 3 years after Johan, i.e. 1679-1681/2.

      Alternative parents:
Although as explained above I think that Nicholas probably was the son of Matthew and Johan, it is possible he was their nephew. Matthew's brother Israel had a son Nicholas (page here) baptised in 1672/3. His fate is uncertain, he may have died in 1676, but that burial is not shown as of a child. His mother had another son named Nicholas in 1681, but as her new husband was a Nicholas he may have wanted a son given his name, even if he already had a step-son with the name.
Nicholas the son of Israel might have moved to help his son-less aunt and uncle, or because of friction with his step-father. He might then have  named his children after the aunt and uncle who were substitute parents to him. But we might have expected him to name a daughter after his mother. I think the evidence for Nicholas being the son of Israel is quite weak, and hence conclude he was probably the son of Matthew and Johan.
