Name Thomas SPURRELL Relationship
with Teresa Ann GOATHAM Baptised 18 Jun 1820 Walkhampton Church, Walkhampton, Devon, England
- From PR entry (image on FMP, viewed 1 Nov 2012)
Under heading "Baptisms ... Walkhampton ... 1820"
June 18 [Reg. Entry] No. 125. Thomas, parents John & Patience Spurrell, abode Walkhampton, father's occupation Shoe-Maker, ceremony performed by W. Hunt, Curate
Gender Male Occupation From 1839 to 1891 Roborough Mills, Roborough, Devon, England
Miller - Aged about 19 Thomas went to live at Roborough Mills to learn "the business of a Miller" from a Mr. Gent, his brother-in-law.
In 1851 Thomas was shown in the Village of Jump in Bickleigh Parish. What was known as Jump is now known as Roborough, so I don't think he had moved when in the 1861 - 1891 censuses he was shown as at Roborough Mills (still in Bickleigh Parish).
At the time of the 1861 census he was employing 2 men and 1 boy. The 1 boy may refer to Exeter-born apprentice James Harding who was living with the family.
In 1871: still at Roborough Mills, but no mention of any employees, no apprentices living in, but Thomas's son John still living at home and shown as "Miller's Son" - no doubt he was working with his father.
Still in Roborough in 1881, and still shown as miller, but now at a house no. 9, a widow and just with his daughter Amelia - perhaps with just the 2 they had moved to a smaller dwelling.
Retired by 1901.
At Michaelmas in 1864 Thomas along with John Hodge of Buckland Monachorum, yeoman, entered into a Lease of Roborough mills, Bickleigh, for 14 years from Sir Massey Lopes of Maristow.
An earlier lease on the Mills (to John Saunders of Chudleigh, a millwright - in 1820, for 46 years) shows that this was a corn on grist mill, the rent then being £10 pa.
But it has risen massively to £72 10s pa when Thomas (alone) entered into a lease for 3 years of the Mills at Lady Day in 1879. Maybe the 1820 lease was to a millwright because work was needed to get the mills into a good working condition.
I have now seen (and photographed) these documents (held at the PWDRO); but have not yet had time to examine them closely and add any relevant information from them.
