    • From IGI and DP CD; agree
John Vogwill, son of George and Elizabeth
    Gender Male
Occupation 1813  Stone, Whitchurch, Devon, England See the place on a map and other information about it - if available (many more will be in time); also all individuals with events at this location
    Farmer
    • I believe he would have been the John Vogwill mentioned as having tenure of Stone when it, and other land, including Lower Grimstone, which John was later to farm, were being sold.
    Bequest 28 Jan 1827
    Left 2/6 by his father
    • In his will George Vogwell left 2/6 to each of his children living at the time of his death, to be paid to them a year after his death.
For my comments on this see the page with my transcription of the will.

Occupation 1841  North Godsworthy, Peter Tavy, Devon, England See the place on a map and other information about it - if available (many more will be in time); also all individuals with events at this location
    Farmer
    • Had 2 sons living at home, the elder (John) also recorded as a farmer but his younger (George) as an ag lab. Possibly the family farm wasn't large enough to provide work for all, and George had to work for a larger farmer.

Probably left North Godsworthy at Lady Day (25th March) 1850, as in advert of his and his son John's farm appeared in the Western Times in 1849, with the farms to be let "from Lady-Day next"
Occupation From 1851 to 1861  Lower Grimstone Farm, Lower Grimstone, Whitchurch, Devon, England See the place on a map and other information about it - if available (many more will be in time); also all individuals with events at this location
    Farm work
    • "Lab on Farm" - Indoor work (according to 1851 census), "Works on Farm" in 1861.
He was living with son John and John's family at the time of both the 1851 and 1861 census, and his work was probably on their farm.
Died 1866  Tavistock Reg Dist, Devon or Cornwall, England See the place on a map and other information about it - if available (many more will be in time); also all individuals with events at this location

    Notes
    • "The Book of Peter Tavy with Cudlipptown" states (p51) "John Vogwill came to Peter Tavy from Widecombe-in-the-Moor at the time of his first marriage to Joan Dobson, c. 1805". I'm not sure that this is right - and not just because his marriage was in 1808. Whilst it is true that he was he was baptised in Widecombe, as his two older brothers had been, his 6 younger siblings, baptised between 1785 and 1797 were all baptised in Whitchurch, so it would appear his parents, probably with their 3 Widecombe-born sons, had moved to Whitchurch when John was in in his infancy (although it was not unknown for children to be brought up by grandparents or other family members). In addition, his paternal grandparents were both buried in Whitchurch in the later 1780s, whilst his homonymous uncle John Vogwell may have moved sooner, being married in Walkhampton in 1780, and subsequently living in Whitchurch. Another uncle, William Vogwell, did stay in Widecombe longer but subsequently moved in the other direction, to Christow. The large number of Hannafords in Widecombe, in particular the baptism of no less than 6 Elizabeths and a Betsy during the time period when his mother could have been born, means I have not yet tried to explore this side of the family and so don't know what close Hannaford relations may have remained in Widecombe.

    • From the PR entry (image on FMP, viewed 10 Jun 2019)
Shows George Vogwell married Elizabeth Hannaford, both otp, married by Banns, both made their mark as also did witness William Vogwell. The other witness was Nathaniel Tremill, who was witness to most marriages in Widecombe at this time and so almost certainly Parish Clerk. (William was probably George's brother though could have been his father. Siblings or other young people were more often witnesses than parents)
