Name George VOGWELL Relationship with Teresa Ann GOATHAM Born 10 Aug 1819 [1] Baptised 22 Aug 1819 St. Peter’s Church, Peter Tavy, Devon, England - From PR (DFHS transcription, not seen PR image)
'George Vogwell', parents Henry and Jane, abode: Peter Tavy Village, father's occupation: labourer
Gender Male Occupation From 1826 Widecombe in the Moor, Devon, England [2] Shepherd boy and bird scarer - "When George was seven years old he was apprenticed to a farmer, as a shepherd-boy and bird-scarer. He had to take care of the sheep on Dartmoor, near Widdicombe, and he was paid fourpence a week. The farmer was a horrid man, and George disliked him. Anyway, he wanted to go to school and learn to read and wirte. So one day George pushed the farmer into a pond and ran away.
George did not go to shcool, but he learned to write and to keep accounts and read, by himself. He was a great reader."
Being apprenticed at the age of 7 suggests he was a Parish Apprentice.
Occupation 1850 Haldon House, Dunchideock, Devon, England Head gardener - (The address of Haldon House is Dunchideock, but the 1851 census show it as being in the Civil Parish of Kenn)
A bit of speculation here.
Marian Warriner's notes record that George Vogwell was head gardener for Lady Palk at the time he married Maria. While gardener is probably accurate, terms such as 'head' do have a tendancy to get added in family stories, so must be viewed with caution.
Who was Lady Palk? She must have been the wife of one of the Palks of Haldon House. But was she the wife of the 3rd Baronet, in whose time George must have been a gardener, or was there a dowager Lady Palk? The fact he was said to have worked for Lady Palk rather than Lord Palk might suggest a dowager, but George and Maria are said to have met while working for Lady Palk, and the 1851 census shows Maria still working at Haldon House. I haven't yet tried to find out, but since the 3rd Baronet was born 1793 his mother had probably died by 1850. So why was George referred to as gardener to Lady Palk? - possibly because the 3rd Baronet preferred to gamble and socialise rather than look after his estates, and had to leave England to avoid his creditors!)
Information about the Palks at Haldon House and some pictures of the House can be found in this PDF (see esp p.6-8)
Although most of the House was demolished in the C20th, one wing remains and is now the Lord Haldon Hotel.
Residence 1851 Combe Pafford, St. Marychurch, Devon, England - Lodging with Edward (an ag lab) and Mary Cole.
This was about 17 miles from Haldon House where his wife was living and working (both being shown in the census as unmarried). Perhaps George was trying to set himself up to work independantly as a gardener, in the way he subsequently did in Chicago.
Emigrated Abt 1854 Chicago, Cook Co., Illinois, USA [3] To the USA, sailed to Quebec - Marian Warriner had heard 2 dates for the emigration of George and Maria - 1845 and less than 18 months before Emmanuel and his family joined them in 1870. However, since they were there for the 1860 census it must have been prior to then.
Residence Aft 1854 417, 33rd Street, Chicago, Cook Co., Illinois, USA [4] Occupation 1870 Chicago, Cook Co., Illinois, USA Gardener Voyage - departure Bef 29 Mar 1872 Glasgow, Lanarkshire, Scotland - George sailed with his wife and adopted daughter (his niece), 2 year old Emily, recorded as Emma, on the S. S. Anglia.
They were shown amongst passengers who had boarded the ship at "Glasgow & Morville", and in the 'country to which they severally belong' column was shown U, so all 3 were shown as US citizens by this time.
Emily's daughter recorded that the family returned for a visit to England so that Emily's (natural) maternal grandparents could see her. Since they were in West Devon (I believe - not checked) but the family departed from Scotland, I think they must have also travelled up to Northumberland to visit relations there, perhaps particularly Emily's paternal grandfather and George's brother, Henry Vogwell who moved to Cramlington around this time.

Other Partners: Ann ROUNSEVELL m. 25 Jul 1856Mother Jane BAILEY, b. Abt 1787, Kingsteignton, Devon, England , d. Mar Q 1852, Stoke Damerel Reg Dist, Devon, England (Age ~ 65 years) Married 27 Sep 1816 St. Mary’s Church, Bathwick, Somerset, England - I was guessing the marriage would have taken place about 1816, i.e. not too long before the first child was born (IF I know of all the children)
And then I found this marriage - a good match on date, and given the rarity of surname Vogwill seems too much to be co-incidence. But in Somerset -why did they marry in Bathwick? Census shows Jane to have been born Kingsteignton so I don't think it indicates the bride being a different Jane Bailey.
Now (29 July 2017) the Somerset baptism index is on FMP, there is not a single (F/V)ogw(e/i)ll baptism in it, in any part of Somerset at any date; clearly Henry was from elsewhere.

Family 1 Jane STONE, d. Dec Q 1848, Chippenham Reg Dist, Wiltshire, England Married Mar Q 1844 East Stonehouse Reg Dist, Devon, England - George is said to have been married before he married Maria Langler. There appears to be only the one marriage which could be his, and of the 4 brides on the page one was a Jane, which fits the bapt of son Henry:

Family 2 Maria LANGLER, b. 25 May 1819, Plymouth, Devon, England , d. 5 May 1899 (Age 79 years) Married 18 Aug 1850 Exeter Reg Dist, Devon, England [5] - GRO ref: Langler, Maria to Vogwill, George q3 1850 Exeter RD 10 124
Met when they were both working for Lady Palk ("head gardener and head laundress")
Had no children of their own.
Maria is listed after George in the 1870 US Federal census, described as keeping house (relationship not shown).
Also in the house is an Emanuel Vogwill with presumably wife and baby, but Emanuel was George's nephew not son.
Emmanuel's wife died and their baby, Emily, was adopted by George and Maria.

While I think this will be correct in the main respects, something recorded over 100 years after the event and passed down by word of mouth cannot be trusted to be 100% accurate. - [S165] Vogwill info from Emily (Vogwill) Warriner via Marian Raynham, Marian Ray, p. 8 (Reliability: 3), 12 Aug 2013.

Since this info. from family knowledge agrees with a GRO ref. for the marriage of a George Vowill in all respects (date, place and bride's name) I'm sure it must be right.
This source gives how the couple met and the actual date.
