    Notes
    • (Research):Is this right (that Elizabeth Jane was a dau of Henry and Betsy)?

I believe they had had a son Eleazar whose birth was registered early in 1863 - possible but unlikely they would have another one the same year. Was another Vogwell family living in the Liskeard area at this time? Or was Elizabeth the dau of Henry's oldest son, another Henry, who married in April 1863 (but he and his wife-to-be could have passed themselves off as married and registered the birth with his name)

Did Elizabeth Jane die in infancy?

There was an Elizabeth Jane whose birth was registered in q1 1864 and an Elizabeth Jane whose death was registered q4 1863. Could be the same child if the birth wasn't registered immediately - but if the birth had not been reigstered when a child died would the parents then bother?
I'm not aware of another Elizabeth Jane who would have been present in Liskeard RD in 1863 so it does suggest it might be the same.

    Married
    • Assuming Henry became a widower for a second time before marrying Betsey, then they must have married between the 1851 and the 1861 censuses.
Not only can no such marriage be found but Marian Warriner's notes record that Bessie had 4 children who were adopted by Henry: Thomas, James, John and William. However, the sons of these names appearing in the census returns were clearly registered as Vogwills when born, not as Baileys, and for the last 2 at least the births were after the censuses show that Henry and Betsey were living together as a married couple.
But maybe Henry and Betsey had not married and so legally the sons were not his?
Formal adoption did not exist at this time but Henry may have informally have adopted his own sons by registering them with himself shown as father.
(The four named as being adopted were children 1,2,6 and 7 of the 8 Henry and Betsey appear to have had together; the other 4 all died in infancy)

The daughter, Kathryn, of one of those said to be adopted, William, said  her father used to say he was one of thirteen sons by two wives - it is hard to imagine he would have said this is he was adopted and not a biological son of Henry.

Since no death has been found for Henry's 2nd wife, Jane nee Wedlake, perhaps he did not marry Betsey because he was already married? [1]
