(IGI shows "Of Liskeard" and born 17 11 1840 in Herodsfoot, Cornwall)
Gender Male church Northumberland, England [1] Methodist Preacher - I am not certain if it was this Henry or his father who was the preacher; I now think probably this one as Marian Warriner's info. describes him as "very religious".
In "The Collier's Rant: Song and Culture in the Industrial Village" a Henry Vogwell from Cramlington is mentioned as a 'character' preacher: "in the pulpit he would excitedly pace backwards and forwards, speaking rapidly in a weird, wailing voice, often until he was out of breath".

Residence 1881 25, Railway Street, Dawdon, Seaham, Co. Durham, England - (Seaham Harbour)
With wife and 4 children
Emigrated Aft 4 Apr 1881 To USA - Emigrated with Sophia to US and settled in Chicago; about 1881 but after the census
Died 2 Dec 1905 Chicago, Cook Co., Illinois, USA Siblings 4 brothers Half-siblings 7 half brothers and 1 half sister (family of Henry VOGWELL and Betsey BAILEY) Patriarch & Matriarch William VOGWELL, b. Est 1720, d. Nov 1789, Whitchurch, Devon, England (Age ~ 69 years) (2 x Great Grandfather)
Jane PELLEW, b. Abt 1817, (possibly), Stoke Climsland, Cornwall, England , d. Sep Q 1849, East Stonehouse Reg Dist, Devon, England (Age ~ 32 years) (Mother)Notes - Recorded as "at home" in the 1851 census, when aged 10 - presumably meaning he was neither at school nor out at work. Or working at home? - doing chores for his parents? Since his mother as well as his father was shown as working, perhaps he was doing housework and helping to look after his younger siblings.
Although his daughter Lavinia was born in Cramlington in 1871, Henry's wife died back in Cornwall the following year and 2 years later, in 1874, Henry remarried in Cornwall. But he was back in Cramlington for the birth of his daughter Elizabeth Jane in 1875, and all records from then to the last in England, the 1881 census, are in the North East.

Colls is referring to Bastow Wilson's "A Primitive Methodist Diamond Field. The story of a Nortumbrian Mining Circuit" (1909) and I think the quote describing Vogwell comes from this earlier book.
