-
Name Henry VOGWELL Relationship with Teresa Ann GOATHAM Born Abt 1817 Kingsteignton, Devon, England - From censuses - birthplace shown as Kingsteignton (1851, 1871); Teignmouth (1881)
Baptised 24 Aug 1817 St. James’ Church, West Teignmouth, Devon, England Gender Male church Northumberland, England [1] Methodist Preacher - I suspect that the preacher might have been Henry, the son of this Henry.
In "The Collier's Rant: Song and Culture in the Industrial Village" a Henry Vogwell from Cramlington is mentioned as a 'character' preacher: "in the pulpit he would excitedly pace backwards and forwards, speaking rapidly in a weird, wailing voice, often until he was out of breath".
Miscellaneous From 1838 to 1869 Thirteen sons? - The daughter, Kathryn, of one of Henry's sons, William, said her father used to say he was one of thirteen sons by two wives.
At the time of writing I have 13 children but only 12 sons. William could have been slightly wrong, or I may be missing one son. Emily, the daughter of another son of Henry's (Emmanuel) used to point to a photo of Henry with a wife and small son and say he only had one child by that wife. Since I know of 7 by Henry's third wife and 5 by the 1st, it suggest the wife in question was the 2nd; I know of no children of hers. This would make the 13 correct but would still leave William as slightly wrong - as then of course it would be 13 sons by 3 wives.
Occupation 1838 Labourer - Both when he married and when his son George was baptised he was shown as a labourer, as he was again in 1845 when Emanuel was baptised
Residence 28 Jun 1838 Townlake, Sydenham Damerel, Devon, England - At the time of his marriage
Residence 26 Aug 1838 Down Gate, Stoke Climsland, Cornwall, England - When his son George was baptised
Residence 1841 Grenofen House, Whitchurch, Devon, England - Next entry was a house with his parents and sister.
Henry, age '20', was in a house with Henry Pellew '15' and 2 FS (female servants) - Susannah Norb? and Fanny Brook (both age '20')
Occupation 1841 Whitchurch, Devon, England Ag lab Residence 1845 Holme Bush, Stoke Climsland, Devon, England - When his son Emanuel was baptised
Residence 1851 Stentaford Land, Whitchurch, Devon, England - With his wife and four boys recorded as his sons - Henry (aged 10), George (8), 'Manuel' (5) and another Henry (4).
Actually it appears the first 3 were his sons, the last his nephew, son of his brother, George, by his first wife (who had died in 1848). George and his second wife were living separately, both as servants and recorded as single; I guess they couldn't afford to be together as a family at this time, and so couldn't have their son Henry with them.
This Henry's parents and sister were neighbours in Stentaford Land (or living as separate household in the same house - not clear from census)
Occupation From 1851 to 1861 Copper miner - His sons baptisms in 1861 and 1865 also show him as a miner though material not specified
Residence 1861 Pontons Piece, Cheesewring Railway, Linkinhorne, Cornwall, England - Living with wife Betsy and sons Henry, George, John and William.
Residence 1865 Cheesewring Railway, Linkinhorne, Cornwall, England - When his son James Frederick was baptised
Moved Between 1867 and 1869 Cornwall to Yorkshire - Sometime between the baptism of his son Thomas in 1867 and the
birth of Eleazar in 1869 Henry and his family left Cornwall and moved north to Rosedale West in Yorkshire, a centre of ironstone mining.
Moved Between 1869 and 1871 Yorkshire to Northumberland - Sometime between the death of his son Eleazar in 1869 and the 1871 census Henry and his family left Yorkshire and moved further north to Cramlington, a coal mining area of Northumberland.
Occupation 1869 Rosedale West, Yorkshire, England Ironstone miner Residence 1871 Terrace, Cramlington, Northumberland, England - Living in house with a Northcott family - husband from Tavistock.
With wife and sons John, William, James and Thomas.
Occupation From 1871 to 1881 Coal miner - At Cramlington, Northumberland in 1871; at Hetton le Hole, Co. Durham in 1881
Residence 1881 Barrington Terrace, Hetton-le-Hole, Co. Durham, England Died Sep Q 1890 Tynemouth Reg Dist, Northumberland, England - Found his widow in 1891 and 1901

Elizabeth JORDAN, b. Est 1732, d. Yes, date unknown (Great Grandmother)Notes - (Research):A Henry married Jane Wedlake in 1850; if this Henry's 1st wife Jane had died and he had married another Jane that would explain the age discrepency in the age of Jane (between marr to Jane Pellew and 1851 census).
He clearly did marry a Betsy / Elizabeth. Can't have been the 1856 marriage of a Henry Vogwill - that was his father's 2nd marriage.

Other Partners: Ann ROUNSEVELL m. 25 Jul 1856Mother Jane BAILEY, b. Abt 1787, Kingsteignton, Devon, England , d. Mar Q 1852, Stoke Damerel Reg Dist, Devon, England (Age ~ 65 years) Married 27 Sep 1816 St. Mary’s Church, Bathwick, Somerset, England - I was guessing the marriage would have taken place about 1816, i.e. not too long before the first child was born (IF I know of all the children)
And then I found this marriage - a good match on date, and given the rarity of surname Vogwill seems too much to be co-incidence. But in Somerset -why did they marry in Bathwick? Census shows Jane to have been born Kingsteignton so I don't think it indicates the bride being a different Jane Bailey.
Now (29 July 2017) the Somerset baptism index is on FMP, there is not a single (F/V)ogw(e/i)ll baptism in it, in any part of Somerset at any date; clearly Henry was from elsewhere.

Family 1 Betsey BAILEY, b. Abt 1826, Whitchurch, Devon, England , d. Sep Q 1908, Easington Reg Dist, Co. Durham, England (Age ~ 82 years) Married - Assuming Henry became a widower for a second time before marrying Betsey, then they must have married between the 1851 and the 1861 censuses.
Not only can no such marriage be found but Marian Warriner's notes record that Bessie had 4 children who were adopted by Henry: Thomas, James, John and William. However, the sons of these names appearing in the census returns were clearly registered as Vogwills when born, not as Baileys, and for the last 2 at least the births were after the censuses show that Henry and Betsey were living together as a married couple.
But maybe Henry and Betsey had not married and so legally the sons were not his?
Formal adoption did not exist at this time but Henry may have informally have adopted his own sons by registering them with himself shown as father.
(The four named as being adopted were children 1,2,6 and 7 of the 8 Henry and Betsey appear to have had together; the other 4 all died in infancy)
The daughter, Kathryn, of one of those said to be adopted, William, said her father used to say he was one of thirteen sons by two wives - it is hard to imagine he would have said this is he was adopted and not a biological son of Henry.
Since no death has been found for Henry's 2nd wife, Jane nee Wedlake, perhaps he did not marry Betsey because he was already married? [2]

Colls is referring to Bastow Wilson's "A Primitive Methodist Diamond Field. The story of a Nortumbrian Mining Circuit" (1909) and I think the quote describing Vogwell comes from this earlier book. - [S165] Vogwill info from Emily (Vogwill) Warriner via Marian Raynham, Marian Ray, p. 3, 4 (Reliability: 3).
Mentions 4 sons of Bessie being adopted by Henry and William's claim to be one of 13 sons.
