  • Name Richard NARRAMORE
    Relationshipwith Teresa Ann GOATHAM
    Born Est 1585
    Gender Male
    Feoffee 1626
    Humphrey Borrington's Charity
    • In 1626 when new feoffees were appointed to administer Borrington's Charity Richard 'Norramore' was amongst them, as was Walter 'Norramore' and his son Bartholomew.

      "Borrington's Gift.

Humphrey ßorrington, by deed, bearing date 15th April, 1589, granted to Richard Borrington and five others, and their heirs, a yearly rent of 20s. to be issuing out of his lands called Hayes, in the parish of Ideford, on trust, to distribute the said rent, or the greatest part thereof, amongst the poorest people of the said parish of Ideford, with a proviso for appointing new trustees, when the number should be reduced to two.

This statement is taken from a deed for appointing new trustees, dated 30th April, 1626.

Lord Clifford is the proprietor of the lands called Hayes, whose tenant pays the annuity. It is distributed by one of the feoffees about Easter, among the poor of the parish, generally in sums of 1s. each."

    Appriser 1633
Inventory of the goods of John Babb
    • A Richard Narramore, I suspect this one, was the appriser of John Babb of Bishopsteignton
    Will 28 Aug 1654  [1
    Written
    • This was a nuncupative will, yet appears to have been written down 3 months before Richard died. Perhaps between it being recorded and written up for him to sign he had a stroke or became in some other way incapacitated and so was unable to confirm it himself.

Alternatively, since all that survives is (as it usually is) the register copy of his will that may have the wrong month, or the Parish Register may have been written up later and the wrong burial date recorded.

    Yeoman
    • (from his will)
Richard mentions heifers, ewes and a nursery of young trees.
    Died
    • Richard Narramore left a nuncupative will; usually such wills are written as someone is dying but I have it that it was written on  28 August 1654 and he was not buried until 20 Nov 1654. This suggests that his health had deteriorated so he could not sign his own will but that he went on living for nearly 3 more months - or that a date is wrong.

The copy of the will I have - images of the Register copy - has August very clearly as does the Parish Register November, so if a date is in error it must have been mis-transcribed centuries ago. The register looks like the events were entered at the time (the ink is not uniform in colour) so that is probably correct.

    Married
    • Richard, who married in Ideford 1615, mentions a brother John in his will (still living when it was written). I am guessing that was the John married in Ideford in 1599.

An Andrew was buried in Ideford in 1621 - was that this Narramore, the unknown father of Richard and John? (I only know of one son of Richard, who he named John, but that John did name a son Andrew). Alternatively, Andrew could be a son of Richard for whom I have not found a baptism.

    • Richard's marriage to a Joane is known of from his will, since he was survived by a wife Joane. This must have been between 1648 and 1654.
