Name John MORTIMORE Relationship with Teresa Ann GOATHAM Born Abt 1626 Stokenham, Devon, England - Was John the son of Thomas Mortimore of Stokenham?
I think probably he was, see my research notes at the bottom of this page.
(date and place shown assumed from baptism)
Baptised 17 Mar 1625/26 St. Michael and All Angels’ Church, Stokenham, Devon, England - From PR entry (image on FMP)
"March: 17: John the Sonne of Thomas Mortymor and Cresten his wyfe was Baptized"
Gender Male Died Yes, date unknown Buried - With no suitable burial of a John in the FMP index of the burial registers at Slapton, or of a Johane (his wife) I wondered if they might have been buried elsewhere. A John was buried in Stokenham in 1672, but looking at this entry he was recorded as a John son of Thomas, not the way an older person would usually be described, plus a Thomas had had a son John baptised in 1669, so it was almost certainly that John. Some of the PR entries in Slapton during part of the period in which John could have been buried are in a hand pretty difficult to decipher, I wouldn't be surprised if quite a few entries have been mistranscribed or omitted. Judging by the PR entries indexed on FMP, the Mortimore family appear to have arrived in Slapton with the marriage of John to Johane Bastard in 1653.
Since Slapton PRs only date from 1634, it is quite conceivable that there were surnames that had long been held by people in Slapton, but if few in number, there may by chance have been no events until 1653. What makes this less likely in the case of the Mortimores is the absence of the usual odd entries for people one is unable to link to the tree, using the PR data alone. There are usually a few burials, that one may guess belong to parents or uncles, aunts, even grandparents; marriages that may be of cousins or siblings, but because the baptisms don't go back far enough the people can't be linked. In this case there are no such entries until the sole burial of a Catherine Mortimore in 1700. This is sufficiently long after the first appearance it may well be of a daughter whose baptism has been mis-transcribed or was missed at the time.
I understand the average age at which a man married was about 28 at this time so have estimated 1625 for his year of birth. Obviously it could be some years either side of this. But the only entry on the FMP index that could be him was in 1625/6 in the neighbouring Parish of Stokenham. Looking at the other Mortimore entries there, there is no marriage or burial that fit that John, so it looks like he left the parish, which increases the liklihood that this is where this John came from.
It is unfortunate that no more children of John are known of, as the names might have provided an extra clue.
I didn't have Mortimore ancestors in Slapton for very long, since I am descended from Elizabeth, daughter of the John who married there in 1653. She had one brother, John, who had two sons. I have not attempted to traced John's descendants beyond a couple of generations, but there were Mortimores living in Slapton, most likely descendants of John's, until the latter half of the C19th.
