with Teresa Ann GOATHAM Baptised 13 Oct 1813 St. Michael’s Church, Blackawton, Devon, England
Gender Male Occupation From 1844 to 1851 Lower Wadstray, Blackawton, Devon, England
Farmer - In Sherborne Mercury - Saturday 14 September 1844 (p.4, under 'South Hams') :
Blackawton Fair - The annual fair at Blackawton was held on Monday, the 9th inst., when the supply of cattle was rather small, and not much business done; notwithstanding a great number of persons attended. It was decided by the farmers present that the three cows shown by Mr. John Pitts, of Wadstray, were by far the best cattle in the fair. They were valued at £15 each."
1851 census: At Lower Wadstray Farm, farmer of 60 acres employing 2 men
(Richard Cole, 14 year old farm labourer living in)
Occupation 1861 East Stonehouse, Devon, England
Butcher Occupation From 1871 to 1881 Blackawton, Devon, England
Butcher - Living in Blackawton Village with his wife as a separate household in the same house as his father, the latter still shown as "butcher", John was presumably now taking over from his father (who was now aged 81)
No occupation shown on 1891 census - had presumably retired, especially as he had moved back to Plymouth. Shown as retired butcher in 1901.
Residence 1891 8, Princess Street, Plymouth, Devon, England

Siblings8 brothers and 8 sisters Patriarch & Matriarch
William PITTS, d. Yes, date unknown (Grandfather)
Johane BASTARD, b. Est 1628, d. Yes, date unknown (4 x Great Grandmother)
Notes - Amusingly John's age, accurately reported on the censuses when he was with his first wife (who was of a similar age) and again after his second wife had died, was reported as some 4 years younger when he was with his second, somewhat younger, 2nd wife. Presumably he found the age difference a bit much and felt the need to make out it was less!

Family 2 Eliza, b. Abt 1828, Pembroke, Pembrokeshire, Wales
, d. Between 1881 and 1891 (Age ~ 53 years) Married Between 1861 and 1871 - In 1871 and 1881 John was with a wife Eliza. However, the index on FreeBMD does not have a marriage of an Eliza to a John Pitts that seems plausible.
Given that I can also not find a death to fit that of Eliza, as suggested by the census, I suspect that John and Eliza may not have married.
