Miscellaneous 1860 Margate, Kent, England
An unhappy marriage? - From 'The Kentish Gazette', 3 April 1860:
In the section "Margate Police Court."
Wednesday.-(Before the Rev. G. W. Sicklemore; and T. Blackburn, G. E. Hannam, G. Y. Hunter, and Dr. Price, Esqrs.)
John Hyde appeared in answer to a summons charged with assaulting Mary Ann, his wife, on the 25th ult.-Mr. Towne appeared for the complainant, who stated that she was the wife of the defendant. She had been married to him about 17 months, and was confined about a month ago, but the child was since dead. On Sunday last he gave her a violent blow with his fist on the head, and he had several times before struck her, though she had never provoked him to her knowledge. When the child was born it was covered with bruises, and the only reason the defendant assigned for his illusage was that she had pawned things out of the house unknown to him, but she had not done so. He began to show his "airs" three days after they were married, and she was in fear of him from his threats; and if he was was not bound over she was afraid he would do her some bodily harm. He had locked her out and would not allow her to come in, nor allow her anything.-Defendant denied ever having struck his wife but said she had threatened to jump down the well. He thought the rent was paid, but instead of that there was £1 1s. 4d. due, and she had spent the money upon rum and pawned his watch unknown to him.-The mother of the complainant said she had frequently heard the defendant say he would have her life, and that she had seen nothing wrong on the part of her daughter since she had been married.-Held to bail, himself in £10, and two sureties in £5 each, to keep the peace for three months.
