    • Peter Charrosin was appointed as one of the bedesmen of Canterbury Cathedral.

The term beadsman comes from the Medieval English bede, meaning prayer, from Old English biddan, to pray; so literally a beadsman was "a man of prayer". Generally a beadsman was a pensioner or almsman whose duty it was to pray for his benefactor; cathedral beadsmen were originally those almsmen whose duty it was to pray for the souls of deceased benefactors. A relic of pre-Reformation times, beadsmen still figure in the accounts of English cathedrals.
It's rather ironic that the son of somone who had come to this country for his protestant beliefs should be in the postion of a relic of a practice - prayers for the dead - that he would have opposed!
