Baptised 11 May 1798 St. Michael and All Angels’ Church, Stokenham, Devon, England Gender Male Occupation 1841 Slapton Cellars, Slapton, Devon, England Innkeeper Bequest 1842 £10 and 'my silver watch' - Bequest from his aunt Susanna Efford (nee Issell)
The will of Thomas's aunt, Susanna Efford
Thomas was left £10, twice as much as other nephews who were left a specified amount, plus her silver watch - the only item specified, everything else was to be turned into money.
(His cousins, sons of his Aunt Betty, sister of Susanna, were left a share of the residue; I don't know if this was more or less than Thomas received.Occupation From 1850 to 1851 Slapton, Devon, England Cordwinder / labourer - Although Thomas had several jobs, when he had retired in 1871 it was as a "retired shoemaker" that he was recorded so it seems as if this was something he had done longest. maybe combined with running the Slapton Cellars Inn or managing property.
In 1851 he appeared to be recorded as a a shoemaker and a labourer (word between the 2 not clear - 'an'(d) or 'or' ?)
Occupation 1861 Slapton, Devon, England Land proprietor - In the 1851 the next-but-one entry to Thomas was a "landed proprietor". Maybe this gave him the idea of investing money he made or had inherited in property, and making money through letting.
With a will with bequests of freehold property and hundreds of pounds, it does seem that he made a success of this, as it would seem unlikely he made this sort of money as a shoemaker.
